Since the New Peace and annihilation of Humanity was likely some time ago, it's probably been quite a long time since the Ferrymen actually did any Ferrying; maybe he just accepted the gesture out of nostalgia?

They do ferry but with actual ships. Maybe they do see coins, who knows. Anyways, the ferryman doesnt discriminate against gopros, unlike gabriel.

Yup. Probably dante took it, since there is a lot of greek mythology in the divine comedy.

the ferryman is basically charon from greek mythology. sinners pay him coin to be let onto the ship to be ferried to someplace (im not that up to date on charon or ferryman lore as you can tell)

basically, the river overflew due to massive deaths, so now they use ships, and the spoons used to be used to row the ferries.
