get to a mindflayer wave with just the starter pistol and then you'll know how to play the game
Being "slow" means being low-aggression and that DOES get punished a decent fair bit in this game, you're constantly encouraged to run up to things, dash, slide, and do everything you can to throw off the enemies' movements while still avoiding their attacks.
HOWEVER, there IS a time and place for everything, and the game doesn't punish you for trying to learn things, outside of your rank (which you can always revisit later!), so dying and restarting from the last room is a really good way to quickly pick up what you're supposed to do.
If you think an enemy is doing something you don't understand? Standing back and dodging their pattern is a good solution, and it helped me learn 1-3's boss and 3-2's boss' stuff very quickly, just remember to not do that once you think you've learned what they're doing.
It's a fast game, take the game at its own speed. or slow down a little. Not, Go at a snails pace.
Up to that point, I had treated the entire game a little bit like Punch-Out up to a point, I'd wait for the opponent to attack, then get out of range and hit them if it was a boss, or I'd just stay as far away as possible and pick the targets out with the Revolver and Shotgun's alt-fire, it was basically filling me with a false sense of safety up to a point.
When 1-4 finally happened, I was completely stuck, I think I had like 20+ consecutive restarts on it until my friend explained how the boss' mechanics worked, after that? I basically steam-rolled Standard difficulty, it was THAT bad of a habit.
