how does this work, strip one face off a die and I lose it? so confused...

All of the manipulation buildings serve to make custom, unique, stronger dice.

Enhancement Chamber makes a random side stronger (up until +4)

Forge lets you take two dice, it combines the sides randomly, and you get a Construct Die with a mishmash of what you combined, and the Construct part let's you empower sides to +8. You lose the original dice but end up with a unique stronger dice. Construct dice also have special powers.

The Laboratory lets you take 6 dice, take a side from all of them, to make a really unique dice with a custom side combination you cant get anywhere else. I am going from memory, but I believe the lab let's you choose the side you want, so whatever the 6 sides are facing up, I think it makes that dice. It also making it a construct. You lose all 6 dice, but end up with a unique stronger dice.

The obelisk lets you ascend a die which then you can reuse it in a later game as a starter dice, (imagine starting with +8 gather or +8 swords for instance) which be super useful if you want to tackle a harder scenario (for achievements) or some of the more hidden meta things that in the game. Or just for fun.

It's been a while since I used it, so you should experiment with it anyway for fun in case I am missing a detail or am wrong about if the Lab lets you choose your side. The lab is something you can just do late game if you are winning to make interesting dice to ascent for future plays.

In most scenarios, none of this is required, but can really be helpful on harder difficulties, scenarios, or just a specific play style. There are a few specific scenarios where it's extremely useful to try out.
