In search of the next uncharted waters video game
Those who have played the original games will completely understand what I'm talking about.

I stumbled across the original uncharted waters for NES at my local video game rental store probably 1992. I was barely old enough to properly play the game and remember letting my boat drift several screens before I realized it was navigating on its own. I can;t remember why but i stuck with it and had one of my most rewarding video game experiences.

I end up renting uncharted waters 2 new horizons for a month straight which cost me about 30 bucks of my allowance. I loved the game so much. It improved upon every part of the first game and to this day I feel it's one of the best games ever made for the SNES. For me it had the perfect balance of story/open world/rpg/building up fleets and towns/and tactical combat.

Those who have played the New horizons understand how fans have been waiting 25 years for a proper successor. I've played every thing I can find that I thought might scratch my itch, sid meirs pirates, patrician, port royal, etc. The closest I would say is combining space rangers 2 tactical combat and fleet building with starcon universe.

I'd literally pay 200$ for a proper uncharted waters 3 that could live up to the hype.
I'm curious how much of this series influenced the developers of this game? I definitely plan to try it out although I'm a little turned off by fantasy races (more so because of my bias for new horizons).

Curious how this game prepares and has anyone yet found the proper successor to uncharted waters?

It's probably the closest you'll get but it's not the same. The trading/fleet aspect is barely there, with no economy system to speak of. The meat of the game is the class/tactical combat (think FFT), with everything else just sorta being there.

I absolutely love UW:NH... just bought Star Traders, will have to check it out.

Horizon's Gate is heavily inspired by UW:NH and is similar but different:
  • Trade, exploration, and piracy are all legit ways to play through the game
  • Trade good value is based on distance rather than port type
  • Examining objects/artifacts/creatures earns you money (but sometimes requires land combat to find things)
  • Naval combat is more tactical, so you can't just cheese it by buying the best sword & armor and dueling the leader
  • Naval combat is completely optional except for 1 fight (which you can hire help to beat for you)
  • You can join and serve under 3 different nations instead of 6
  • There's only one 'campaign' instead of 6, but it's completely open

If anyone has recommendations for games like UW:NH, keep 'em coming. I'm always up for more experiences like that.

Star trader sadly has the same issue where you can easily cheese every ship fight by just boarding the other ship. In an interesting twist the campaign is optional and the world will keep on moving even if you don't participate in it, but this means that you're always on the clock on are limit in how much you can do on your own free time. Personally I prefer star wolves as far space based ship/rpg game.

There is UW3, and UW4, and 5, and 6. None have english translation. 5 and 6 are mobile games.
Just google Daikoukai Jidai.

Ya I’ve heard of them but from what I hear they are different types of games. On top as you said would need an English translation.

"Uncharted Waters IV" is now available in HD! Become an adventurer, merchant, or soldier and explore the 7 seas during 16th century Europe's Age of Discovery. To do so, you must become the ruler of each of the 7 sea areas and search out the secret treasure "Hasha no Akashi".

Except it won't allow me to view it on Steam (due to not being in English, maybe?)..

Hi all picked up game on most recent sale. Only just started playing and purchased first boat so still haven’t made my verdict. No doubt it’s heavily inspired by uncharted waters. I see only one trade good per town for sale. Not sure if I like that or not compared to uncharted waters system. Will have to see how that plays out. Anyways don’t have tons of time to play now but will try and update as I go along

I very much like the simplified trade system. It loses a bit of realism, but its nice to not have to have a spreadsheet to figure out what trades I'm making.

Ok played a few more hours. Still very early with 3 cogs and completing first royal mission.

Definitely starting to feel hooked like a "one more voyage before I stop" feel. No doubt the game is about 2/3 heavily inspired by UW . At this point I'd say its the closest thing out there.

I've played tons of tactics games. Still not sure how I feel about it here. Not that it's bad I do enjoy it but it's a big bit or micromanaging. Some people will love that though.

A few things i miss from original game though

-Menu indicating overall percentage influence on port so you can see how easily it can be flipped through investment. I'm still trying to figure out how dynamic the world is and if other fleets are significantly impacting investment in ports or nation changes.

-Trade system that isn't just about distance from port. I actually don;t mind the single trade good per city but basing it solely on distance makes all trade goods feel the same. I don;t expect something like patrician as that gets too much into simulation territory.

-Character portraits. I know this is hard to do with all the races but visually in UW it made a big difference seeing captain portraits.

-Recruiting characters. Seems like they are all level 1 and doesn't really matter who you hire which takes away personality wise and idea of finding super characters like gunners and such in the original UW.

All this being said I'm wondering if the developer would ever consider setting up a kickstarter for an unofficial UW3? I feel fully confident they could make an amazing game if they used that universe (might need to consult around history or geography). Could even include some supernatural elements like Atlantis or ghost ships.

Definitely a positive review from me so far,

This game lifts from a lot of things for a pretty unique experience. It is however, primarily a tactics game, and its most polished quality. Putting that off to play the game as UW for 30 hours is possible though.
Im still searching for a decent successor as well! They actually did release the sequels at Steam, but no english translation hitherto... Is it such a fuss? I bet the community would translate it ASAP if it was released with a basic modding kit for that purpose...

Personally I'd have loved if this game had more actual RPG and plot and ♥♥♥♥ because it's such a solid tribute otherwise, but ah well. Still enjoying it a great deal, because god knows there aren't any good alternatives.
