How depressing is this game?
this is weird to say but I can't handle gloomy games well, especially when it's about a dying earth. It looks like a nice game but the subject matters also feel incredibly real and terrifying

This one is subjective. I say the story is gloomy and given that your actions cannot change the story, somewhat hopeless. I still have not decided whether the ending on the DLC Macro is more depressing or not than the base game. In any case, the story is not attached to our reality, given that there are aliens fighting the humans and the United Nations has big robots to fight against them. I hardly could relate to what the protagonist was facing.
If you ever play the game, you will see signs of death (mostly body bags) and poverty/refugees (military tents, booze, etc). The low fi style makes it easier to detach from these images. In any case, I did not find the images gross.
Having played the game, I can tell the game loop itself is not as depressing as you may think. They hardly have any impact on you. The timer tends to make this game more gamey in that it pushes you do things fast. There are a lot of things to do in that limited time. And there is little time for anything depressing to soak into you. The objectives themselves tend to be somewhat random stuff. There was nothing I can tell it was hitting me hard. The levels themselves tend to have some funny stuff to compensate somewhat.
Not sure if my comment convinced you either way. I know it is a mixed bag. I recently watched an animated movie about orphans titled "Ma Vie De Courgette". Some of the things the kids talked about can hit hard, like how they became orphans. There was nothing graphic on that, but still hearing a man shot his wife and committed suicide with the kid watching, that is hardcore. I feel like that hit me harder than this game.

The story is told through environments, posters and newspapers, and small little details. Thus, you could take all of these things and imagine the darkest story known to man. Or, you could look at things on a pretty individual level and it will be pretty chill.

The credits end with "Dedicated to the Umurangi Generation, The last generation who has to watch the world die."
I'd say it's pretty depressing.

it is though. last level title even say that. just because the game vibe is cheerful, the story is not

tldr we lose the kaiju war. although it doesnt make sense but the dev did it. probably because the kaiju itself is mutated or different one from the previous invasion

What makes you think we were ever winning?
