Turning off 2FA totally did the trick. It's dumb, but it works.
Glad I could help. As an optional step you can unlink your Steam account from EA and relink. Once the accounts are relinked, you can turn on MFA and the former gray screen will have 2 methods to authenticate. You can now pick 2FA and use that code! Admittedly this took a couple of tries to work but it did eventually. I also have the EA app logged in and running on start up.
It might use the email field to pre authorization for EA. You would still need to enter in a password or 2FA is my guess. My one drive is not synched.
