There are fleet battles with and against AI.
For multiplayer, there are often custom matches you can join. You can still get Dogfights during peak hours, and there are community events for Fleet battles on Friday, Saturday, and Monday.
I tried using HOTAS. About 30 minutes of my play time was trying to configure the controls...
And using HOTAS was too floaty imo.
It might play better on keyboard and mouse or ideally a controller it seems.
As for the campaign, all I played was the prologue and the first mission before I gave up over the **** controls. The prologue was fine, but then it makes you interact with each of your teammates individually so they can vomit their backstory on you, which is some really lazy narrative design IMHO.
EDIT: Worth the $1.99 sale price, just so you can see how awful it is. And who knows: you might actually like it. In my opinion, two dollars for a Star Wars game is always worth the gamble.
The campaign is so-so.
The real value of the game currently lies in the competitive scene. You won't find many games that can do flight/space sim Esports like Squadrons can.
This has gotten better since the sale. People just have to continue trying fleet battles (which is a big ask since there aren’t a lot of people on, I know).
