I found with HOTAS I could not aim well, better than mouse mind but I switched to controller after trying it and finding i could hit stuff way more accurate and track targets easily.
1) calibrate, calibrate, calibrate.
2) set a small deadzone (up it in 1% increments until the wobble stops with your hand on the stick at rest)
3) disconnect any other analogue device (ie. if you are using joystick and have a controller, the game may be jittering due to conflicting inputs between the two detected devices). Also if your stick or throttle has a thumbstick, make sure its not interfering also.
im 100% certain that sensitivity is NOT linear is squadrons... because thumbstick curves are not linear. Devs may have got rid of the thumbstick deadzone on HOTAS, but thumbstick response curves remain.
Every other sim i have ive setup linear responses and Squadrons still doesnt respond linearly.
But thats just my opinion, without someone diving into the games code to prove it.
another thing i didnt know until recently is that 50% for joystick sensitivity is linear. my current setup is a vkb gunfighter with a 200mm extension, a gladiator mk2 on my left hand as a throttle and vkb t rudder pedals. ive notice that the pedals help a lot compared to just using the twist in the joystick

Allows you to set sensitivity curves for sticks or controllers
A socially distant digital hug for you my friend
I’m using X-52 pro and rudder pedals. I ultimately left all my dead zones at 0 and changed my sensitivities: roll 100%, pitch and yaw 75%. What made the biggest difference though was I changed my tactics to high speed strafing rather than outmaneuvering. It’s easier to line up at a distance.
Recommend straight line that goes up to half or 2/3 right before end in remap then very sharp to 100% after the last red marker.
I've been following CrunchyGlass's excellent advice, and it's made a ton of a difference, but I still feel like *parts* of the curve are wrong with what I'm doing and that's after HOURS of fiddling.
The frustrating thing is that it's really hard for me to gauge the difference between "good enough" and "good as a gamepad would be."
I think whatever funky acceleration curve the game has built-in is what is throwing me out and making it so cumbersome to counteract its effect and get a smooth accurate and responsive movement going.
Would be nice if people put up their Vjoystick profiles somewhere to share. When I'm more settled with mine I'll prolly whack it on my Google drive for people to DL, but ATM I feel like it's two steps forward, one step back with every adjustment I make.
EDIT:
Here's what I'm using. I might fine tune it a bit (and update it as I go), but I think this is approaching as good as I can get it.
This is with ingame sensitivity and deadzones set to 0, etc. Not mapped rudder because I'm just using stock (non virtual) input for that as it works fine.

Many thanks for this link. I've only played a couple of dogfights after adjusting the joystick curves, but it seems to be helping.
