VR and Ryzen 5
G'day all,

as I came to know it, recommended system requirements for running Squadrons on VR on AMD platforms specify a Ryzen 7 2700X CPU (which is an outdated one, built on Zen+ technology).

Nowadays, there is the Ryzen 5 3600X, built on Zen2 technology. According to comparison sites like CPUBenchmark.net, it is better than old Ryzen 7 2700X overall... except that it lacks 2 cores.

Likewise, in what comes to GPU, the one recommended is Radeon RX 570 technology.

That GPU is two years older than Radeon RX 5500 XT and according to VideoCardBenchmark.net, it is better than old RX 570 overall... except that it lacks 10 compute units and its bus interface is PCIe 4.0 x8, instead of PCIe 3.0 x16 on RX 570.

Last but not least, Electronic Arts' website does not tell how much VRAM is recommended for the video card to provide.

I'm trying to take the opportunity of this being Black Friday so to build a new desktop PC. I don't intend it to be an overkill desktop PC; I just want to make sure that my machine complies with the recommended system requirements for running Squadrons.

So, can I go for a Ryzen 5 3600X and a Radeon RX 5500 XT instead of the aforementioned system requirements and run Squadrons on VR?

Thank you all, have a nice day and take care!

Keep you cpu, its not outdated, put your money in a much better gpu.

Thank you LurkingFear — what I meant is that Ryzen 7 2xxx is an old version of the more modern 3xxx and 4xxx Ryzen 7 CPUs. However, Ryzen 7 CPUs (from the 2nd generation, 2xxx) onwards are very expensive here in Brazil. I intend to invest on Ryzen 5 3600X.

Likewise, RX 5500 XT is already not exactly cheap here; investing on anything better than that (like RX 5600 XT) implies on a big effort.

So, in order to comply with the *recommended* system requirements for running Squadrons *on Virtual Reality*, is it enough to invest on a Ryzen 5 3600X CPU and a Radeon RX 5500 XT GPU?

I have a Ryzen 5 2600 and a Radeon RX 5700 XT. And VR runs pretty awesome. Of course it depends on the headset you have. I own a Oculus Rift S and with this specs Squadrons VR is great.
tl;dr: What LurkingFear said ;)

Thank you very much, Ulzelbrutz!

While both comments from LurkingFear and yours don't actually tell me, black and white, whether a Ryzen 5 3600XT and a Radeon RX 5500 XT do comply with the *recommended* system requirements for Squadrons on VR, I consider myself satisfied with your reply. ;-)

Unfortunately, everything related to computers is very expensive here in Brazil. What I will do, then, is to invest on a RX 5500 XT and, as better GPUs become affordable, I trade the RX 5500 XT for something better.

On the other hand, if someone tells me, outright, that RX 5500 XT is lousy for Squadrons on VR, I'll see if I'm able to walk the extra mile to purchase at least a RX 5600 XT GPU.

On paper your system should be ok for the game. Headsets have different resolutions some may be more demanding. My suggestion would be to get the game and try it, steam allows you to return games, with less then two hours of play or two weeks.

I would still say to keep your setup until you can afford a better gpu. Wait a bit, once the new series of gpu cards are more available on the market older ones will drop in price. You will also see them poping up on the used market.

Full disclosure I dont own the game. I came here to look for answers regarding gamepad compatability, saw your post and decided to try and help. I have a lower spec pc than you and would not think twice about running it in VR.

Thank you, LurkingFear!

The point is — my PC is almost 13 years old! I'm trying take advantage of the fact that we're on the famous Black Friday and I intend to build a PC which would suffice for Squadrons on VR.

You tell me to purchase a better GPU in the future. Which one would you, or Utzelbrutz or anyone else, to recommend as being the one adequate to run Squadrons on VR?

(I understand, at this point, that there's nothing else to discuss about the CPU and that a Ryzen 5 3600X would be just fine, even by the "recommended specs" standards.)

Of the two gpus you listed the 5600xt would run the game better. The 5500xt should be ok too.

But here in the states the cost of a 3600 cpu and a 5600xt gpu you are in the ballpark of a rtx 3070 Msrp or a rx 6000 card ,when they return to stock. You would have a great gaming rig there.

The gpu is more important in game performance. That 2700 cpu is no slouch .

Hopefully someone here has the 5500 /5600 card you want and can give you a better idea of performance.

I don't have any personal experience with VR, but from what I know about gaming in general, cores rarely matter. Clock speeds are the main factor. If you have equal clock speeds to the reccomended, 6 vs 8 cores shouldn't make a difference. Also, GPU is the most important of all.

Thank you all!

The point is, with this "cores" thing, that this is the first time in almost 13 years that I build a new computer and I didn't know whether game developers counted on them. My concern was --- do I have to purchase a CPU with that number of cores? It seems I don't.

It is my understanding, then, that Electronic Arts should update their info on system requirements; also, should emphasize the idea that number of cores are not mandatory, but the CPU performance overall.

By the way, also due to price, I intend to purchase 2×8GB, DDR4 2666 MHz RAM modules instead of more expensive 3000 or 3200 MHz ones. Bad call? (Due to their clock)

If you plan on going with a Ryzen CPU I would recommend using faster ram , at least 3200mhz , Ryzen benefits greatly from faster ram clocks and will generally run faster with higher clocked ram speeds.

Thank you deX; I'll check out the prices.

Ok ,my apologies, i misread your original post , thought you had the r72700 already and was gonna upgrade to the 3600

I just got the game I have a r5 2600 and a rx 580 with a rift s headset the game ran fine. Is still get the best gpu you can afford.

No problem, LurkingFear. :-)

Black Friday is over — I have bought a Ryzen 5 3600XT and a Gigabyte RX 5600 XT, 6 GB.

For the next Black Friday, I plan to buy a VR headset and a joystick. Recommendations, folks?

2700x is still a great cpu, i have mine OC'd at 4.1 all cores just for temp regulation, letting it run stock it's a fiery beast but has yet to let me down.
paying more for the 3xxx really isn't going to improve performance overall - if you really wanted an upgrade...
I see you've already made your purchases! Good luck and don't forget RAM!

The next BF is a year away, who knows what will be out then :).
