How dare you to force me to play as REBEL SCUM?!
Seriously, why Dogfight mode has preference for the side you can choose. But in Battles you are placed in a team according to whatever? I did not upgrade Republic ships at all and I want to learn Empire ships specifics, why force me to play what I don't want?

Is there that much fear about players demographic and numbers?

Obviously I'm talking only about multiplayer.

No problem for me in story mode to play as any side if that is needed for narration style.

Yes, the game is niche and neither Motive nor EA expect it to have large playerbase. That's why it's 5v5 and that's why we can't choose sides.

Probably because it's ranked, maybe they feel you should be able to handle all sides and ships if you are to get a rank.

Might also have to do with matchmaking, I don't know how hard it will be to get Galactic Ace, but if there's relatively few and the game's playerbase decreases, finding matches might be difficult if people can only play with others that have the same rank.
Good way to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each side in my opinion.

I'll be honest, I hate the rebellion planes, they are just slow and/or weak - power to the empire

Uhu, like all the unpopulated 5vs5 games out there. You're completely right, no one plays league of legends, valorant, overwatch, cs:go, rainbow six siege, 5vs5 is totally dead and that's why they're all 5vs5.

At least they allow you to pick the team/sides of the ma- oh wait no they don't.

I wonder why that is.

One of the challenges in the two faction sides is that people eventually start to prefer something that is found to be "OP". It is little similar like if you give in a FPS games with longer ranges player choose a sniper role, so most will just stick to sniping. If the game has maze kind short ranges, the players prefer to go for full auto weapons.

So forcing players to change sides and so on will force them to rethink their gameplay styles.

Wtf are you even on about? Take your meds.

they could have easily allowed the choosing of sides, and if one side fills up, youd have to choose the opposite side to maintain balance.

A perfect example is how they do it in Mordhau

Overwatch, CS:GO and R6: Siege don't let you choose if you're attacking or defending (and are 6v6 and 5v5 respectively), and they are massively popular years after they were released.

I haven't played the others.

There are no rebels in this game. Only Pilots of the new Republic! Boooyah! :NewRepublic:

What does that have to do with anything? You do realise the game is first made and then it can become popular, right? 5v5 are safe numbers, that's why designers use them. Space battles could have easily justify teams of 20v20, but space simulators are a niche genre and that's why devs went with small teams so the game is playable, with short waiting periods, no matter how successful.

Same with the sides. These decisions are made for the shortest matchmaking times, even with tiny playerbase, which Squadrons has and which will only get smaller in time.

That's not how ranked teams work work in Mordhau, just standard multiplayer modes.

Also, it's only map/objective orientation in non-ranked multiplayer modes that is affected by team choice - it's otherwise just a red team and a blue team, no exclusive weapons, armour, perks.

This is the opposite of a perfect example I'm afraid.

If one side fills up (probably the most populare one), others will leave =\
