I know, I feel that way, games like surviving mars and surviving the aftermath sort of scratch the itch as they add purpose and excitement however they just lack that level of depth you get with each individual sim with this game
There are mods for this type of play. Sacrificial has mods for such things and i can't link it so you'll have to look it up on your search engine. just type "ts4 sacrificialmods" it should be the first one on the list.

If you are looking for some crazy things though, watch through some of these Jim Pickens videos, many things that are done require mods though, like those made by Sacrificial mentioned above.
I think an important thing to understand with Sims 4 is you arent a player playing the game, you are a director directing the game. There is a ton of strange storylines you can play out without mods. But adding in certain mods does help you complete scenes or stories way better. If you just sit by and let the Sims guide you, then you will likely never leave your home lot. The game doesnt tell you to do much of anything. It is on you to make the funny or compelling gameplay.
More excitement. I've heard alot of people recommend the sims 3 due to the Open world and apparently there is more drama and events going on with npc sims?
I think I played some mod where i could murder sims but I was just looking the ability for other sims to do it to each other to spice drama and criminal activity up in the neighborhood
I see the sims as a sandbox where you can make your own fun. Mod the game as you want. You can make sims you know and express you fantasy. It's mostly a single player game so you can't really hurt anyone, just don't screw with real people. I really don't screw with my sims but everyone has there own goals and thoughts and play the game as they want. If I could not mod the game I would probably not play it.
The first person view is nice, you could sit and watch a sunset during a date, I'm really glad they added it.
