*Life is Strange (All three games were absolutely AMAZING with incredible soundtrack)
*Beyond 2 Souls
*The last of Us (I and II)
*Heavy Rain
*Until Dawn
All of these games are absolutely amazing. Personally, my favorite out of the list would be life is strange. Although the choices don't have as much as a significant impact, the story line for the games are fantastic. LIS: Before the Storm (prequel to LIS) is a hard hitter.
not quite the same, but also with great story, lovely visuals, great sound design and story, I really enjoyed
- hellblade
- a plague tale: innocence
I'm playing the medium at the moment but really struggling to get into it so far.
to be honest though, I felt detroit was like the gold standard of this type of game. nothing else i played after it felt felt quite as epic.
Ok I agree with everything but Life is Strange (Season 1 I mean). I never understood why Max actually got her powers.
Spoilers ahead: Either one ending you basically never played the game or everyone dies.
Even Telltale choices matter alot more then LiS Season 1.
True True, that was my only problem with that game and the last episode was a little far fetched but I still loved it. Can't wait for the new one to come out
Might i also suggest, for your branching storyline games :
Disco Elysium,
Way of the Samurai 3 & 4,
Shadowrun D & Shadowrun HK
Consortium,
Outer Wilds,
Deus Ex [w/Revision mod] & Deus Ex Human Revolution,
Yakuza games (yes, all of them),
Shenmue 1,2 & 3,
Mass Effect 1/2/3/4 (yes, i know.. but honestly, they're brilliant!)
and pretty much most LucasArts point'n'click games from the 90s (yes, most - they really were that good)
Hope that list helps :)
PS: Honourary mentions go to 60 Parsecs!, Dreamfall LJ & Dreamfall Chapters, and Cloudpunk, which don't necessarily fall into the branching storyline thing, but deserve a mention as they're all fun in their own distinct ways.
A little different because it isn't one where choices matter or action based, but for an amazing story try What Remains of Edith Finch. Because that game is very short and linear, I would suggest to never pay full retail for it though. I'd say spend $5 at the most and a lot of times you can even get it free.
About your question... I'd strongly recommend Heavy Rain. It's a previous title from the same game developer and in my opinion it provided a much deeper storyline. The graphics are quite good, maybe not as good as 'Detroit', but the story is IMO amazing. I personally prefer Heavy Rain over 'Detroit'.
Another player already mentioned it but I still wanted to chime in as well: Life is Strange. It takes getting used to but the overall game is quite similar. There's an overall story which plays out in different chapters and each chapter has puzzles for you to solve. It can be quite challenging!
