Game is desighned for a XBOX Controller. Controller must be Genuine Microsoft Controller. You can use a wired XBOX controller wich is the easiest to get, or you can buy the senser for your computer from New Egg. I know that they sell this because it's where I got mine. I you have Win 7 there is a driver proceedure that you need to use to enable the senser. This is outlined on New Eggs sight. I had the same problem with a Nyko Air Flow Controller.

You could try using the X360Controller-Emulator from here:
http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/

From the left side under downloads, get the following file:
x360ce.App-2.0.2.163.zip

You can then configure the settings to how you like for your controller, then put the output files into your GTAIV folder (where the game's executable is), and it will let most controllers emulate a Xboc controller.

I use a logitech game controller and this method works fine for me for this games as well as most other games that are only programmed to used an Xbox controller.

I don't know what's wrong but I've tried this emulator, I tried a similar emulator. I went through all the steps, I went through the Help I've started and restarted the game probably 20 times and I still cannot get my Logitech Rumblepad 2 to work in this game.

I actually did get it to work a few days ago for a few hours, but when I came back the next day to play again it just didnt work at all.

Anyone have any ideas or could provide some input please?
I had Logitect RomplePad and it worked.

Nothing. It just ran after Windows detected it.

well thanks for the input but I just cant seem to get it to work.
Windows recognizes my device, but the game doesnt :(
Well, in the Option, Controller Option, if the Direct Input is enabled it will not work for your controller.
