can someone tell me what a serial code is

when i start up gta4 i come to this little page and it says your serial key is printed on the back of your game manuak please enter the serioal key in text entry box provided below and press the activate button your computer will then connect to a product activation server and request and unlock license i keep getting this after anothey screen that says for my unlock licence please help cause i have no idea what to do and i dont have a manual

hey man thanks that helped alot but now when i press play game i get this crap GTA IV FATAL ERROR: windows vista:need to have service pack 1 or higher to proceed and im playing on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ windows 7 any help here?

Set the game to run in compatibility mode, and select "Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)" for the OS compatibility. See the following thread by Beck for details.

It is taking me some time to get the code man why is that, do I have to reinstall?
