Xbox Controller Crashing Game.
Hey there, I'm having problems within the game itself.

1. When I change car viewing angles (I use an Xbox Controller, it's Select), the game crashes with what I think is the POV view.

2. It also crashes on missions, starting from Jamacian Heat. When you get on the ledge after he gives you the pistol, it should go into the cutscene, but it doesn't, as it crashes.

GPU: nVidia GTX 570
Pro. : AMD FX-8320 8-Core
RAM: Kingston 4x2GB DDR3
Windows 8

Thanks.

EDIT: Because of the source of the problem, the title has been changed.

First things first, please verify the integrity of your game cache in Steam... Steam Library > Right-click GTA IV > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Second, are your graphical settings completely maxed out? If possible, please run the in-game benchmark, find the BenchmarkXXXXXXXXXXXX text file that it stores in your \My Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\Benchmarks\ folder, and copy/paste the entire results here in this thread.

Third, is your CPU or GPU running hot? How high are the temperatures running in game?

Finally, is any of your hardware overclocked?

Everything's been verified. I've redownloaded the game twice also. Nothing is overclocked, and I have HWMonitor, CPU caps at about 50, and GPU is about 55-60.

Thanks for the detailed follow-up.

Everything looks pretty normal for a high-end set-up. Your rig is more than capable of running this game at those settings (specifically, screen resolution, view distance, and detail distance). I doubt you have a hardware limitation, but just to be sure, you could try running with the -safemode command line as a test, and then attempt to trigger any of the previous crash points (e.g., changing camera views in car, the Jamaican Heat mission). That command line will set your resolution and graphical settings to bare minimum to completely unload the hardware and produce the highest possible frame rate. After you finish troubleshooting, you'll want to remove the command line for long-term gamplay. Otherwise, the graphics will look like crap. Nevertheless, "safe mode" serves its purpose well for troubleshooting.

Otherwise, I'm wondering if its a problem with something in your OS configuration or some kind of other software conflict? I don't have Win8, so I can't really give you specific advice there.

Finally, it could also be related to your AMD processor. Unfortunately, all of my rigs have Intel processors, so I can't really help you much if the issue is AMD-related.

Thanks for your help.

I've tried the -safemode command, with no success. Compatibility mode is off, and I have tried that too.

I knew I shoulda never gone with AMD. My LGA 775 worked miraculously with all other stuff, but was too old. Heh.

Don't give up. Someone here is bound to come up with something.

Have you checked the Windows Event Viewer crash logs to see what the OS says is the root problem for the crashes?

Right-click Computer and choose Manage, and then chose Event Viewer in the left pane. Look for anything flagged under Error or Critical.

Hmmph, it's not even crashing anymore. Instead, the game disappears from the processes.

There's also nothing in WEV. I just want to play my game. >:

Thanks for your help.

So it's no longer crashing, and you're able to get through those problem areas now?
WizYuan Jun 1, 2013 @ 8:48pm
No, the game just closes without an error report. I'll keep trying until I get one.
WizYuan Jun 1, 2013 @ 9:14pm
Alright, I still don't get an error report. I have, however, found this out:

If I use the view key (V) in the car, it works perfectly, but through Xbox Controller (Select), it crashes. Any ideas? Also, I haven't tested it on Jamacian Dust, as I already done about 3 playthoughs, because I thought it was corrupted. I don't feel like playing through it until the thing on the Xbox controller works.

Are you using an actual Microsoft Xbox 360 controller, or another brand with emulator software? Is it wireless, or USB?

It's an actual Microsoft Xbox 360 wired controller. No emulator software such as Xpadder, etc. The game is compatible with Joysticks, and Xbox Controllers as well.

Alright, I finally found the root of the problem, and that's the Xbox Controller. I don't know why it crashes as soon as I press a key during any of those missions from Jamacian Dust and beyond, and maybe someone who has fixed it could help me. Thanks.

There may be something wrong with that specific controller? Perhaps the electronics inside are failing, and it simply needs to be replaced?

You should be able to verify that the problem is isolated to the controller by switching camera views inside the car with just the keyboard. If it works with keyboard, but crashes with the controller, the controller is probably failing.

FWIW, I only play GTA IV on PC with Microsoft Xbox360 controllers, but I've never had a single problem with either my wireless or wired controllers.

Thanks for your reply.

I highly doubt it's the controllers fault, as I don't have any problems with it. I use my controller for my Xbox, and GFWL that are controller-compatible. It seems to me more like a faulty registry, .dll, or something of the sort that's causing poor mapping with the game and the controller, and is causing an error of the sort.
Just wanted to let you know, I have this exact problem myself. The game works great on keyboard with V for camera, and when I aim with right click. As soon as I plug in my controller and use either the back button or left trigger to aim, I crash to desktop.

I haven't found a solution yet.
