How is th PC port? Has it been updated over the years?
Hi!

I just bought GTA IV on Steam and THEN I read articles about Steam refunding people and that the PC port was a "horrible mess".

Now my questions are: Is it better now? Any improvements? How is it?

Also does it suport the 360 controller?

Thanks

No but the port is allright on a highend pc. No problem there. I am using wireless 360 controller and no problem there too.

X360 controller support is fantastic, because the game was originally designed around that input device. It works in parallel with KB+M and can be used at the same time. Some people like to drive/fly with controller and shoot with a mouse. The game will accomodate that preference.

The PC port has been updated over the years. Although much better than it was on original release, it is not as polished or optimized for the PC platform as Max Payne 3. But it performs reasonably well if you have a decent CPU. Like Civilization 5, GTA IV is CPU-bound, not GPU-bound, unlike most modern 3D games.

Thanks to both of you, I'm now reassured! I've got a relatively good high-end rig so I guess I'll be alright. Thanks again!

People were getting refunds for this piece of ♥♥♥♥?! Wish I'd known that before.

Character control/movement on the pc is lacking, still feels like I am playing a game from 10 years ago, only good movement you have is when you are aiming a gun. The rest of the game is okay.

I've been playing it like hell for the last days and it's running perfectly for me. I'm happy :D

The physics is still the same as in GTA3, so good luck doing chasing missions on a bike, you will be like a bouncing tennisball on the road. It is a fun sandbox game, but a lot of the missions are only hard, because vehicle physics and character movement sucks.

LOL. The physics in GTA 4 is light years ahead of GTA 3.

Vehicles still feel the same as in GTA3 (in my opinion). Driving a car (any car) feels like you are driving around with 3 elephants in the backseat and springs that bounce the car 3 times over every little hump, driving a bike is even worse to do. Doesn't really matter if you are free roaming, but in missions it sucks a**. I raged Alt-F4'd couple of hours ago doing a mission where you had to chase someone on a bike, it just sucks. I love the missions with shooting and sneaking around on foot and even missions driving a car is bouncy but doable, but missions on a bike uggh it sucks (as in GTA3, SA and Vice).

It is obvious that you do not experience what others are experiencing :) Driving in GTA 4 is fantastic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlkFPi_kq88

From a technical perspective, it is a little absurd to compare a PS2-era (SD) game developed with Criterion Game's RenderWare engine to an X360/PS3-era (HD) game developed with the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). RAGE evolved from an engine that was originally developed for use in the Midnight Club series of racing games developed by Rockstar San Diego.

Yeah, the bike physics in GTA4 are a little janky, especially with KB+M. But there is simply no valid comparison when it comes to cars. Your comparison of the driving physics in GTA3 and GTA4 is akin to an architectural comparison between Torre di Pisa (aka "Leaning Tower of Pisa") and the Willis Tower (aka "Sears Tower"). Admittedly, both are tall structures, but that's about where the similarities end.

So plug in a real analog input device (e.g., X360 controller), ditch Roman's taxi, hop in an Infernus, and enjoy the vastly improved driving physics in GTA4. There is absolutely nothing even remotely comparable to that in GTA3.

Just sying that even driving a GT and Turismo in GTA4 feels like driving a big a$$ cadilac. A sportscar should have tight springs and dampers, it suposed to feel rigid, but they drive the same as any car you pick from the streets, only difference is speed. Compared to car physics in race games, GTA is crap. I have now 2 missions with bikes that I need to do to progress further, both missions pisse s me off due to uncontrolable physics. I am all over the place with the bike and then you also have to shoot the other bike at the same time, yeah fun.
Razorbak86 15/mai./2013 às 14:50
Now your n00b is really showing. ;) The Infernus and Turismo handle like supercars with a proper analog input device. Speed, handling, turning radius, hand-brake spins, etc. You really need to try them with an X360 controller. The KB simply doesn't do them justice.
