WINDOWS 8 - GTA 4 - To get working.

Windows 8 64 bit OS here. :)

I had problems with getting this to run; to solve I did the following.

***** Editted to add 4,5 and 6 and to note that I ran *all* of this, including the steam application under 'administrator rights' or 'run as administrator' *****

I went to the folder (may be just plain old Program files on your PC)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV

1.) then I installed C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\Installers\vcredist_x86.exe

2.) then I installed C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\Installers\gfwlivesetup.exe

3.) I then went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV

and set the following ***3*** files to be ran in compatibility mode (Vista Service Pack 2) .
gta4Browser.exe
gtaEncoder.exe
GTAIV.exe

4.) Also went and downloaded this from http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient didn't notice any difference though from the distro.

5.) I disabled the steam in game community link. (I have no idea if that made a difference, I just hate that thing).

6.) Also I ran the DirectX installers (as administrator) at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\Installers

7.) ***Thanks to MSgt.N!nJ@2202*** go into your GTA IV directory, and Run LaunchGTAIV.exe as Administrator it works.

I have windows 8 and i tried this three time and it didnt work. It came up with GTA IV has stopped working. :(

This was very helpful but i only did steps 1-2 and then tested the game and it worked

Yes I spoke to soon, it seems there is also a problem for GFWL not starting, I'm looking for a fix!

anyone figure out the graphics issue.... mine is running at 800x600 and all low graphics, won't let me change any settings, ran the bench mark but no change..

Thanks for taking the time to compile this thread, but this is not a primary fix and does not work for everyone, it's hit and miss.

Steam are doing nothing about this to attempt to fix the problem and I think that's rather pathetic.

This may work for some people, but for the majority? it will not.

:D yeah dude you are right... this is pretty typical for most IT issues, I was just running this like a typical minor project, using this thread instead of OneNote and conference calls. :)

Anyway --- Last night I tried a few more things, I looked to see if I had multiple versions of C++ 2005 x86 (having a x86 and x64 at the same time is fine) on my machine, I did not, however I was speaking to a fellow earlier who had MANY versions of C++.

SO the problem is this, some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ programs will use deprecated versions of C++, I have Microsoft Visual Studio C++ 2005 redist version number 8.0.61001.

Note I tried ALL of the versions I could download from Microsofts site, and each *single* version worked.

SO would some computer savvy / brave soul who doesnt have it working now and has multiple versions of C++ 2005 uninstall all of theirs and just try it with 8.0.61001? DONT DO THIS IF YOU ARE A N00Bz with a PC you can srsly hose your apps!!!! and still might even if you aren't a n00b.

if someone does, can you let us know if ONLY having one version of C++ 2005 works for you???

Amazing, I've been trying to play this game for a week and doing steps 1-3 on a win 8 system worked for me, also I have to launch the game with the 'launchgta4.exe' as admin for the game to work, otherwise it gives me the old seculauncher failed to load [2000] error when trying to start the game via steam.

p.s. I have a support ticket with RS and they take like a week to respond to anything, and nothing they have told me has helped. I have added this fix to my ticket so maybe they will be able to fix the damn game, but I doubt it.

probably Microsoft Update updated your GFWL install or you did it with another game because the GFWL installed by steam is way out of date and is causing troubles when you attempt to play with it.

Steam's gfwlivesetup.exe = v3.1.186.0
MS gfwlivesetup.exe = v3.5.89.0

I don't know if it is part of the Microsoft Update process anyway got my up to date copy from this link http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient

I am running a Windows 8 64 bit. When I start up the game, it will load up the character screen, but then it will say "The Last Call," or whatever the first mission is. After that it just crashes to my desktop.

Odd that you had to go though all of that to get the game working. All I did was install the Games for Windows Live Client for Windows 8 and then install the game and play. That was it there is nothing else that needs to be done period.

It finally loaded past the Slideshow screen, but i can't change graphics.. i added a "commandline.txt" with "-nomemrestrictions -norestrictions -width (1366) -height (768)" it will lauch the game, bow will come up then minimize. I cant open the box up but i can hear sound from the game through it. Please help

I'm on win8 x64 and just installed through steam with nothing special and it worked. All I had to do was manually instal the games for live client.
