Please explain why GTA4 was awarded Game of the Year

So, I have played lots of sandbox, from Just Cause 2, Infamous, and Saints Row. And Im trudging through GTA4 because it earned a pile of GOTY awards.
Sure the characterization is good.
But it's fairly tedious. Go to A. Shoot someone. Drive back.
Why is this game so high on so many ppls lists?
All the games I mentioned before have higher octane.

GTA 4 was released in late 2007. When I started playing it, it was very early of 2008. Thats why.

wikipedia says april 2008. same year had fallout 3 and saints row 2.

Because we all had different expectations back in 2008. It's just time. The time runs and everything changes. Everything gets better. After another half a decade we will be asking the same questions about GTA 5, and it's very normal.

i personally enjoyed GTAIV much much more than saints row. The gameplay and controlls are bettter. And the way the cars handle is so realistic its crazy awesome.

Saints Row 2 is good and fun, but GTA IV got cool mods. That is way i like gta more mabye other people also.

gta4 had great characters, humor, story and setting/atmosphere, the limitations of the missions are a limitation of game design in general. The missions were paced well, and had enough variation not to be a chore, which is more than i can say for many games.

that being said i waited until last week to finish it, because it always ran like crap with the hardware that was available at the time. play through the campaign using version 1.0.4.0 with ice enhancer.... butter smooth and looked better than gta5 will, and gta4 is 5 years old!

Perhaps it looks better than GTAV in screenshots but your kidding yourself if you think it will look better than V in motion.
