UPDATE TAKEN FROM ANOTHER SOURCE :

1. Open the steam folder and ({install location}\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV and try to run GTAIV.exe manually.

2. Verify you get the WMVCore.DLL Missing error

3 Open Windows Settings > Apps > Apps and features > Optional features > Add a feature, and then locate Media Feature Pack in the list of available optional features

4. Repeat (3) for "Windows Media Player"

5. Reboot, et voila.

Pinning one thread in one gamehub when no-one has actually come to speak to me about it wasn't on my high priority list, if i'm honest with you.

Everytime i launch it, it says it has problems connecting. and my connection should be good enough to connect. help?

here's a list of things I've compiled while browsing the sub-forum.

"Games for Windows Live" is the DRM service used by GTA-IV. Yes, it's bad, thus why no one uses it anymore.

First off, uninstall the ancient version of " Microsoft Games for Windows Live" that the title installed. (you can do this by going to "uninstall a program" and looking for "microsoft games or windows live" uninstall both services.

next : Go install the up 2 date games for windows live (google it)

Next : go to the install directory (steamapps) left click on the GTA4.exe, then right click on it, go to properties, then set compatibility to win7


second NOTE : G4WL does NOT need to be running when launching the game.

save, close.

You can workaround the issue by adding the following to the game launch options
(Right Click -> Properties -> Set Launch Options)
-nomemrestrict -norestrictions

up 2 date G4WL

so, to break it all down.

A.) uninstall the microsoft Games For Windows Live client that the game installs
B.) download & install the newest Microsoft Games For Windows Live - Google it.
C.) go into the game files, install the redist that's included. This includes DX9, and other random stuff
D.) manually set compatibility mode for the GTAIV.EXE from the steam folders.
E.) once in game, can't change settings? apply "-nomemrestrict -norestrictions" in the launch parameters.

note these are things to try one by one. uninstalling & updating GFWL should be enough to fix the game for 90% of users. If this DOES NOT work, continue down the list.

Every time I try to install GWFL I get an error message that the instillation has failed. I've been looking for two days on google for a way to fix it but I was hoping someone here had the same problem.

That's definitely a new one... Have you veriified that the previous version has been uninstalled? It shows up as "Microsoft Games for Windows Live" when you go into the "Uninstall a Program" service.

also, what OS are you on, and is said OS up to date? GFWL probably requires random redists.
