GTA 4 Took From Scarface TWIY?
There are concepts in GTA 4 that are similar to the ones in Scarface. The things I can list are free aim drive-by shooting, the aiming system, a cover system, the way you escape the police, fast traveling with a vehicle (in GTA 4's case a taxi), and the ability to make phone calls yourself for things such as weapons for example. I do wonder if Scarface was considered revolutionary for doing these things. If not, why was GTA 4 given that honor instead? I don't know if those ideas were done before Scarface, but I assume there was a game that did them.

Scarface is the one I can think of though. What do you think?

Yes, rockstar has been stealing sh|t from other games (like Saints Row) and got all the praise because those scottish pricks took over majority of popularity with their gta 3 and got themselves too much name and in rep even in by 2008
It's not uncommon for games to use and expand upon ideas from other games, especially during the infancy of the open world genre. Maybe it's just the fact that Scarface has kind of been forgotten due to it no longer being readily available (since I'm sure it would be a licensing nightmare to get it rereleased/remastered), but at the time people definitely talked about the mechanics GTA4 borrowed from Scarface.

honestly those really arent difficult concepts to think up. its not unlikely that 2 (or more) companies could come up with those mechanics completely seperately.

I mean seriously..... drive by shooting, aiming, taking cover? "Wow how on earth would Rockstar have come up with those on their own?" They're literally no-brainers, and implementing the features intuitively leads to convergent design its basically inevitable that 2 independently created solutions to a common problem would be similar in execution

The thing is that GTA 4 was called a revolutionary game when it came out.

GTA 4 wasn't called revolutionary for you being able to take cover and order guns from your friends via cars, it was called revolutionary for its physics and graphics. Those ideas could have been implemented in games on the PS2.
