is there a purpose to upholding relationships?

I get these thumbs down symbols with contacts when I decline activities with them, what's to gain from having good relations with them?

There are various "bonuses" for having good relationship with friends. BUT they're lame and don't worth the effort.
Even rockstar noticed it how bad they were in base gta 4, so bonuses became unlocked by default later, in DLCs.
