The game can still be purchased externally and will return to Steam.
If you own your own platform, you don't need to rely on 3 other ageing DRM's outside of Steam. Rockstar were complacent right until the very end and it's resulted in their game having to be removed from sale. Just shows how neglectful they were of the PC platform.
Not even Microsoft rely on GFWL for their historic games
They are only 'coming out of their shell now' because they know legally they can't sell something that can't be delivered. You've just proved my second point about them only coming out 'now'.
Publishers that still distribute their product for sale should be expected to support it regardless of its age and not come out of the woodwork when they are legally required to or when their SteamWorks API tells them their keys have dried up.
Rockstar have enough money to maintain and manage their entire ongoing catalogue. I don't know why people defend multi-billionaire companies like this. Their RDR2 port didn't exactly turn out too well either and perhaps if they put some effort in to the PC port, they wouldn't need to do any 'fixes' anyway.
"Grand Theft Auto 4 was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform. With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game," a Rockstar rep said. "We are looking at other options for distributing GTA4 for PC and will share more information as soon as we can."
Perhaps if you actually owned the game, you'd understand.
your keys are already assigned to your profile and wont magically deactivated by itself. gfwl software has always been finicky. i had my own experience with it from RE5, batman arkham asylum. I always required to get a different version of gfwl and not the one included with the game.
If Rockstar weren't so neglectful then they wouldn't have been in a situation where their external keys required have dried up and the game taken off-sale. The product is a mess and falls below the standard that people should be expecting in terms of a PC port and this is down to old tat DRM and lousy support.
