Nope, you're just bad at driving them. Cars don't slide unless you really push them to. Unless you're driving something like a Coquette, Dukes, Emperor or similar, you shouldn't be having issues.

driving is rather realistic

Hello, are you using a controller? Traditionally the throttle is pressure sensative in this game. You also want to break before taking a corner as you would in a real vehicle.

Driving isn't horrible - let me explain. The game starts and you have been stuck on a freighter at sea for months. As you steal and use cars the game 'improves' your road handling skills, but of course thats how its supposed to work. If GTA (the core of which is driving) was 'horrible' it would not hold the market prominance that it so richly deserves. I use five keys for driving - the cursors for accelerate, brake, go left and right and of course the J key for my handbrake.

Do you have any proof of that? I've never heard of GTA IV secretly improving the handling as you play, nor have I noticed any difference in the driving at different stages of the game myself. They still slide around and have the turning radius of a horse-drawn carriage 50 hours into the game.

GTA IV is the one and only (unless you count EFLC as a separate game, which I don't) game in the series with this driving model.

You're not going to tell us that you fix the driving mechanics by doing the copypasta?

I guess you played too much GTA V where the handling is the most terrible in the series. Now go back.

Driving's fine here. You're either pushing the car too hard, or driving a car that's prone to sliding to begin with. In fact, I think the cars should be more slidey in general:

Cars in GTA IV handle worse on dry tarmac, than real-world cars in rain or on snow and ice.

Play a bit and you will get used to it. Its fine once you get the handling. Might help if you slam the break at turns and try to skid so if you hit a object from the side so your less likely to fly through the windshield.

Back when the Logitech G25 was really popular and still kinda new, everyone talked about playing GTA 4 with it. I have a Fanatec wheel (I do a lot of sim racing) and I've been wanting to try it with that. I'm awfully good in GTA 4 with using WASD on the keyboard and have no issues with the physics but the wheel should improve the driving experience even further, that is if FFB works. If FFB doesn't work, I'll stick to my keyboard.

Or you could just brake before a turn and go easy on them so you don't skid at all.

But that's the point, the vehicles even skid at walking speed.
The tires and suspension feel like balloons on cotton candy.
