Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition

Using RivaTuner to Finish GTA-IV 'A Revengers Tragedy' & 'Out of Commission'
A couple of weeks ago I posted a commentary about how a ten-year-old bug in Grand Theft Auto IV stopped the game from being completed on a modern computer and I'll explain why so that everyone is up to speed.

You see when GTA-IV was ported to PC from console in 2008 there was one massively hideous bug which was due to clock cycles between the console version and the PC version not matching correctly. In as far as this clock cycle thing didn't effect 99.9% of the gameplay for GTA-IV it did create a critical error on the very last mission in the game, irrespective of which of the two possible endings you choose to play and caused a timeout to occur wherein you would have to repeat the mission all over again because the bad guy prevailed.

I'll not ruin the ending with a spoiler but will tell you that irrespective of what you decide to do invaribly you will end up hanging from the underside of a N.O.O.S.E. helicopter trying desperately to climb up into it and this is where the problem began because a message flashes up on screen that instructs you to ''repeatedly tap the climb key'' yet because of the clock cycles thing on PC no matter how fast you hit that damned key Niko stubbornly refuses to climb into the helicopter ... until its too late (if at all).

On an older PC this can be 'fixed' by simply running a video recording program in the background as the frame sampling and recording to hard drive (or USB device) slowed down the game just that tiny little amount necessary to have the game 'cycle' just right to make it possible for Niko to climb in and take control of the helicopter, but on modern machines this alone simply isn't enough to make that possible thus the timeout event.

So under advice of other gamers here, I installed a program called MSI Afterburner. Now for those of you who don't know this, it isn't actually MSI Afterburner that helps fix this issue, but one of the programs bundled with it called RIVATUNER and here is how I successfully managed to get Niko going where he needed to be.

(1) I installed MSI Afterburner.

(2) Then I used my computers SEARCH feature to check the programs for a program called RIVATUNER and this turned up one called ''RivaTuner Statistics Server''

(3) I ran Rivatuner, it appeared to sit in my notifications tray as an icon, which when clicked on opened out into a control panel. Programming it is smple. Click on the icon so that the Rivatuner control panel appears and then looking down the options presented find FRAMERATE LIMIT and using the up and down arrows, set it to 30 (thirty frames per second). Now close the program by clicking on the X in the top right hand corner of the panel.

(4) When you're ready, run Rivatuner again - check to make sure the 30fps you set in is there. If it is, its fine. If not, reset so it shows 30fps.

(5) Then run GTA-IV as you normally would. With Rivatuner running in the background you need not do anything else - just enjoy the game! In order to deactivate Rivatuner, simply click on the X on the panel once more to close it.

Simple as - enjoy.

Why on earth would you want to mess with cpu cycles when the bug already commonly known to be linked to frame rates?

For everyone here reading.. the TL;DR version:

1) install MSI Afterburner
2) if asked to also install RivaTuner Statistics server, do that (Main key for this solution)
3) run RivaTuner (Click the tray icon)
4) put "30" in the FPS limiter on the right side of the program
5) Done. Any major hardware accelerated program will now run 30 fps. (Including browsers so keep that in mind)

Turn RivaTuner off if you want your sweet fps back after you have beaten the bugs in GTA IV.

Also note to AntiqueGamer (OP)
Nice going crediting yourself right after I posted the RivaTuner solution on some recent posts you also replied to :P

Clearly you do not understand the mechanics behind it. I'm not interferring with anything. The platform the game was originally designed in DID have a faster clock - anyway, the point is, the method works. And at the risk of upsetting you, if you had been compentent enough the first time when informing me of MSI Afterburner to GO INTO DETAILS about how to use the specifics I've outlined here, it would not be necessary for me to have to explain it. Your commentary, although useful was so vague as to be worse than useless, which meant I had to join the dots Kiwi - and thus have provided a ACCURATE solution description.

One of the biggest fallacies of the Internet and forums in general is the posting of 'advice' by people who either are incapable of explaining clearly or worse, talk absolute garbage. I'm sick to death of going to such forums and see comment after comment which basically is a wate of time, serves no practical purpose and worse of all, does not help the person seeking assistance. I'm 'sorry' your ago has been bruised but your descriptions were so vague as to be useless. Now, no doubt you're going to flame me for upstaging you with an ACCURATE solution description.

Ouch, that hurts man. Naahh.

I have never stated that the solution was solely in MSI Afterburner, that conclusion is something you either made yourself or someone else has made that comment before.
So far I have included to mention that you can install MSI Afterbuner, it also comes with RivaTuner which can be used to lock fps.
It really is NOT hard to find, if you wanted more clear details, you could have asked for it.

Put the blame on me if it makes you feel better.

A lot of these issues in Grand Theft Auto IV in particular are seriously lacking in details.
Many of the Error codes are decoded by the community and mostly by accident.
Memory addressing issues are still unknown and they happen often.
Black screens that are a new issue cannot be fixed by using older solutions so that is again open for people to find out what and why it is causing that.

A lot of the solutions we find have to do with either illegal means in forms of patches, DRM bypasses, outright piracy or in general third party software.
The problems are too complex and should not be up to the community to solve.
To expect a accurate solution from a community that's barely holding on is just selfish.

It should be noted that you tried to use methods that were not suggested by anyone, you even mentioned before that you were looking to use MSI Afterburner, this makes me think you came up with the solution yourself to experiment for a possible fix.

I came to help, not to get lectured at.

I have nothing to do with illegal means - and patches where applicable are legal. Your professionalism is in question - either supply accuate detailed solutions or take a hike because if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. No doubt you're want the last word, so please - comment below.

Dont really care about the last word.

Ignorant and making a TL;DR on your own terms with detailed responses is makes you dig the hole deeper for yourself
----
I never mentioned you had something to do with illegal means.
I said that a lot of the fixes have to do with illegal means.
Nice way of taking small stuff out of context, twisting it.
maybe not on purpose, but it's the end result.
----
I'm by no means professional, never said I was either. I'm just active in the forums, trying to help out.
I know stuff, but never claimed to be the best at it.
If it doesn't work, I can't help because I simply don't know more.
If there are no accurate detailed solutions available, you can still ask for more details, which you haven't done and resorted to degrading on people's competence instead.
----
You have to do with what you can get.
Get help from us or the fossil old posts over the internet that are no longer relevant for the hardware we nowadays use it on.

I can run GTA IV on a freaking Virtual Machine better than most solutions want to offer.
Yet I'm not here, telling everyone to go VM because I obviously know people don't want half assed responses.

I try, and you fail to see the effort that people put into the community.

I would mention your hastily used grammar but I wont..
... Oh.

I come back to this thread and i see... this. O_O
Yep. Some people just over-react and turn into unbelievably smug idiots. Personally I think its very childish. Oh, amusingly 'hastely' isn't a word recognized in the English language, kiwi - yet for some reason you're using it.

Forgive me for my English is not my first language.
I corrected it. It was a typo, yet the word i attempted to use is in fact recognized as a related form of the same word.

Amusingly you didn't bother to look it up.

What you personally think is not relevant.
Don't care much about your personal antics.
I simply replied to you, as you were twisting arguments to suit yourself.

Skimming over the text, and jumping to conclusions like nobodies business.

I got you angry enough with the TL;DR which was not my intention.
Not everyone reads your experience when looking for a solution.

You blamed several examples on me where I have not even been part of.

I'm a bit meh about this now.
It's turning into a predictable mess.
Unsubbed from this pile of garbage of a post.

So, you're a ''have the last word'' type, eh? Hil-lar-e-ous. You know anyone with any sense would have said their piece and walked off. But no, you've turned this into a flame-war (a one-sided one I wish to add) and other people are now contacting me to say that you're really showing an immaturity that isn't impressing them. The last time I asked you to get back to what you're good at, you decided that was a challenge so kept on posting. I was done with this after the first negative reply from you.
