This isn't the case for all but if you want the most recent updates in specific games then you need play the steam version of a game.
It WOULD be possible to make it compatible, but then they'd have to delay PC updates so that the Xbox and PC versions update at the same time, as well as do some extra work to ensure all scenarios work. Such as PC host and Xbox client. Xbox host and PC client, etc.
Just remember, when it comes to things like Gamepass and such, you're playing the Xbox version of the game. Microsoft made a system that allows many Xbox games to be playable on Windows. And there aren't a lot of games that are cross platform between Xbox and PC.
First off, the Gamepass version is a port of the Xbox version. That alone wouldn't be a problem, if it weren't for the Xbox version being vastly outdated.
On Gamepass, there's no DLC yet (so no Monkey and Fox, and no DLC weapons). Bugs that got fixed on Steam are still in the Gamepass version. The game frequently crashes, especially in multiplayer, and when you crash once, good luck reconnecting to the game again - never managed to do it, even with multiple invites from the host. Some ascensions and weapons also got changes that make them behave differently on the Steam version. If I'm not entirely mistaken, even some talents are completely different.
All in all, the Gamepass version needs to be updated and fixed first, before we can even think of Crossplay (if it ever becomes available). If you have friends who are still on Gamepass and find the game fun, despite the issues, I'd recommend for them to get it on Steam - it's well worth the price and I've never looked back after upgrading (and yes, that's how I'll call it, it's the straight up superior version of the game).
edit: Oh, by the way, it's easy to port the savegames over from Gamepass to Steam. There's a guide on Reddit on how to do it.
Although the guide goes into great detail, it literally just comes down to locating the Gamepass folder where the save is located, copying the savegame over to the Steam Gunfire Reborn savegame folder, and renaming it.

I don't think it's been updated at all. Playing MP... I don't bother. I tried and it is a lagfest and guys just leave eventually. Playing with my son in the same house works mostly fine.
Microsoft, steam, these developers and game creators need to do better for 2022 almost 2023... Come on guys.
This tbh. Came to the Steam version b/c of how bad the Gamepass version is. Translations missing, constant dropped connections, weird bugs where I couldn't rejoin a friend after leaving the party and the game didn't run nearly as smooth as the Steam version. It is all around a pretty gross experience on Gamepass vs the Steam version.
