What the hell is a barrier?

I've seen weapons and ability upgrades that mention "barriers" but it's not referenced anywhere else. Based on the English and typos I've seen, I can only imagine the dev used the wrong word here. Did they mean shield? Not the blue bar obviously, but like the ones some enemies wield to protect themselves.

The only time I've seen "barrier" mentioned is for the electric auto-rifle that puts up an electric orb on right-click. They call the orb a barrier.

Are there other references?

I had a weapon that said something like causes an explosion when hitting a barrier I think? And I think also an upgrade for the cat's E ability that said it will go right through barriers. Based on what you said, I'm guessing I just haven't come across enemies that use a barrier yet to have known what it is.

Oh yeah, there is that Orb upgrade, it just means that it will go through walls and such instead of being blocked.

I guess barriers = walls or obstacles, maybe?

As far as I can tell barrier is just a fancy word for walls.
