I like to start the run with shock laser and dagger until I have enough ammo regen.
Ao Bai only gets competitive when you get his 4th passive upgrade (+1 HP per second while dual wielding) his best (and arguably the only good one) skill tree is the one that makes your explosives deal stupid ammounts of damage, having infinite grenades that deal +900% damage and throwing 2 for the price of one that also have an 10m AoE radius is stupidly good against mobs later in the game, but you need to be extremely lucky to get the correct skillpoints or else you are pretty much ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
He has a different approach to combat in comparison to the prince, the problem is that while explosion damage is good, crits and status are king and Ao Bai doesn't excel in status procs nor critical damage (you can make it work but you would be handicapping yourself)
He totally needs a buff, making his dual wielding so that you don't need to reload (if it's a gun like the prism just give it innate multishot) and/or giving every weapon deal innate explosive damage (so every weapon can benefit from maining the explosive skill tree and not lock your character into being forced to use weapons you might not like) would benefit him greatly.
As a side note, the Golden Bow has a unique inscription which says "Arrows can explode" and it would be awesome if those worked with the explosion buffs as well; if it does work, then the base damage of said explosion is just quite low so scales very poorly, even going max explosive damage and radius.
