Max Payne 2: Payback
Max Payne 3: Heat
All of 'em: any John Woo + Chow Yun Fat action movie
That's the general feel I have from the games. When we take into consideration what were Remedy going for, and they even didn't try to hide it, we can easily assume that MP was wrote with the idea to be that noir/crime fighting/mob/gangster/detective/undercover cop/vendetta/stylish shoot out game that is now... And I am fine with it.
Plus Sam Lake likes the play of words with his protagonists:
Max Payne: inflicted pain to the max
Alan Wake: always awake or else
Jack Joyce: making the right choice
The story is fine, its the rugged , "ive been through heaps of sht and cant be bothered dealing with it anymore, but have to, to survive" kind of inner monologue. Im sure UFC fighters deal with this kind of monologue almost everyday. "I really dont want to train today, but i have to , to feed my family" The thing is , most people dont voice their bullsht. This guy does for the sake of the overall feeling to teh game. If it was a book, then you wouldnt hear it and they were going for that kind of noire bookish comic strip thing.

Let's just have a Max Payne 4 where Max gets a really boring job and stays home playing Wii U a lot.
