Exception in startupInit:Directory \data not found

I just had the same problem with Max Payne 1. I found a fix on the forums which was to remove the spaces from the folder name, and to change the installation directory in Steam's files. When I saw the same fix suggested in the forums here for MP2, that mad sense.

Problem is, it's not working. And the reason it's not working is because Steam keeps changing the installation directory back, by itself. I know I'm supposed to be resetting Steam after editing the file, and I'm doing that. But once I open Steam up again, it starts downloading MP2 to the original directory.

I just fixed the same problem. I renamed the Max Payne folder to "MaxPayne2TheFallOfMaxPayne" and the game loaded up. Also Make sure you set the compatibility mode to windows 98/ME.
INCASE THE PROGRAM DID NOT WORK;

I also had to open appmanifest_12150.acf in steamapps with notepad to change: "installdir" "Max Payne 2 The Fall of Max Payne" to "installdir" "MaxPayne2," and restart Steam to get the fix to work.
