No all the Max Payne games are linear, the levels are large but keep you on a fairly tight leash. That being said, it shouldn't deter you from trying out the game, just be weary if you're running on Windows 7 or 8, lots of users have been experiencing issues getting the game to launch, myself included.

No probs on win 7. As for the game, DEFINITELY buy it. You'll be glad you did... classic.
