Max Payne NOT LAUNCHING
Okay, I've tried literally everything. Max Payne just won't launch.
I've tried reinstalling it, which doesn't work.
I've tried running the game in Windows 98/ME compatibility and with "run as administrator" checked, that doesn't work.
I've tried making a .bat file with "start /affinity 1 maxpayne.exe" in it, and launching from there. That doesn't work either.
I've tried changing the directory from /common/Max Payne to /common/MaxPayne and launching maxpayne.exe from there; that doesn't work either.
I've tried editing appmanifest_12140 and changing the "installdir" to "MaxPayne", AND THAT DOESN'T WORK EITHER!!
By "doesn't launch" I mean I can get the LAUNCHER running, but after pressing "play" a white window opens up and plays the Windows error sound, and then nothing else. I have to kill it in task manager in order to close it.

I've changed the resolution and every graphics option as low as they can get, but it still won't run!

I have a Windows 8 if that helps.
So please, I need help!

Just installed this morning for a nostalgia playthrough and have the same issue as OP.

Thanks, but try to assume that the things I have listed above don't work (the guide you showed says to download a GPU update and to set it to run in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode)

For myself, I just set it to run in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode.
Works fine for me.
Furthermore I set the resolution to 1920x1080, disabled Anti Aliasing (I activated it in the control system of my graphic card instead) and activated the widescreen fix: http://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#mp1
If I start the game I need to press ALT + RETURN to be sure to enter the full screen windowed mode but that's ok.
After that I can play without any issues.

Futhermore I forget to say that I use the sound fix too of course.
Otherwise the ingame sound wouldn't work very well on newer systems (I got windows 10).

Fix can be downloaded here: https://mega.nz/#!8cYQWRgK!b3niiEzH8MySkYRLi1l4Ty9Lk7BOkWYS0kKCOtGeebc

The program looks complicated, but it is pretty self-explanatory.
At least if you can read and understand english :awkward:

K so it works now.
I installed it after many months and made it run as administrator and in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode, and for reasons unknown, it works now.
Sheesh.
