Max Payne

Max Payne Won't Launch after Launcher (Windows 10) [SOLVED!]
Can't launch the game after the launcher. When I do, the game crashes, it isn't visible in the task manager. I have tried literally everything.

*Every compatability mode
*Admin mode
*Disable display sclaing
*Forcing CPU affinity
*Disabling Anti Aliasing
*Running from the .exe
*Running from the batch file
*Using Reshade to force DirectX 8

Literally nothing works. I even tried using the Widescreen HUD patch from pcgamingwiki.com which launches a white window that ends up not responding, then crashes.Has anyone been able to get this working on Windows 10 and how? Thanks.

works fine here with the following two mod fixes...

- MaxPayne.WidescreenFix.zip
- MaxPayneSoundPatchv1.12.rar

I didn't need to do anything else you mentioned other than disabling the anti-aliasing in the game. I am using Nvidia DSR to play it in 3840x2160 as well. From there you can optionally use ReShade too, but the SoundPatch by default converts d3d8 to d3d9.

Thankyou, will try this. Also reinstalled the game on my C drive (instead of D) jsut in case.

Got it to work with those two patches alone, thanks!
Also, forcing vsync and tripple buffering off in the control panel fixes the horrific mouse lag.
Also also, enabling AA and AF in the control panel works great.

Do you get the little window with the Max Payne picture where you can change settings. For me it's the first things that launches. I remember when I first tried to play that certain things crashed the game, here are my settings:
Video Settings:
Display Adapter NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti
Screen Mode 1920 x 1080 x 32
Acceleration D3D Hardware T&L

In Options:
Filtering Mode - Trilinear
Texture Colour Depth - 32 bit
Antialiasing - Off
All but Task Switching Enabled
Screen Buffers - Triple
All other settings to High

Now I'm not sure which ones matter but I got the game working and it looks like the Max Payne I remember and with the sound fix and running in windows bordereless I've not had any problems.

Omg you are a genius it worked with this definitions thank you so much :D my childhood has been restaured ahah
Edit: but yea guess i cant have it all since disabling the sound means no sound at all.
Would it be any problem with sound drives ?

You're welcome.

As for sound there is a file you can download which fixes the sound in Max Payne. If you search sound fix in this forum there is probably a link to it. I've replayed through to nearly the last area and no problems with sound. Previously it would cut out and be distorted.

Secondly there are various fixes for full screen. If you notice Max Payne probably runs for you not in full screen so a little gets cut off. The fix I use is a program on steam called borderless gaming, it's a couple of pounds and you can run it in the background. It then turns the windowed Max Payne into full screen windowed which looks identical to full screen.
There are free options including a task manger version which did work for me but was a bit of a faff to do each time.

I really recommend taking the time to at least do the sound fix as it will make the game much better.

In fact if you click on Guides at the top of the steam page instead of discussion (where we are now) for Max Payne someone called Robin-169 (Drawing) has very kindly posted a guide and a link to the file. It's in a zip type of file called .rar which you can extract with a free program called 7zip (there are many other programs that will do too).
It contains in it a readme with instructions on what to do next. The patch was written apparently by DarkjeThe2nd, so he gets my eternal gratitude.

Max Payne for some reason hates anti alaising on newer systems. This is why it crashes. If you are forced into windowed mode at 1080p, drop resolution to 1600*900 to play in full screen

Must be nice to get this game to work. I have tried everything. DirectX8 issues now. Funny, cause I have DirectX12 like any modern PC would...

try the 2020 fix from the guides section, it's supposed to fix the dx8 issue too.
