It works fine on Windows 7 if you use the sound patch. I personally couldn't say for other Operating systems, though.

Works fine on any windows version, with the right patch. I wrote the soundpatch 10yrs ago, it still works for fixing the sound issue, but the latest development is the fixitall patch. That one fixes multiple possible issues, works on w7, w8(.1) and 10. You can find both of them in the guides section.

Wonder why "Steam" instructs only for XP/2000?

That was what it originally was ment for. Starting with windows vista, microsoft decided to drop directsound3d causing sound issues with games that used it, like this one. This game was fixable with the use of a 3rd party soundpatch, or if you happened to have a creative sound card by using creative's alchemy wrapper to 'translate' the a old calls to new format.
After that some other issues started surfacing, mostly related to the fact that current pc's are much faster than the designers of the game ever anticipated and I guess they also never anticipated people would still want to play it 15yrs later...

Anyway, all issues can be fixed most of the time, but it takes some (unofficial) patches and a bit of pc-skill to apply them. Nothing too serious, just browsing to your game directory and putting some files in it, or running a batchfile. If you can do that, there is a good chance it will work fine, but no guarantees.

Yes, I understand. Thanks. I'll put it on my wish list for now.

The removal of the ADPCM codec in Windows Vista and beyond made this game have no sound without conversion.
