In Red Alert, you can build 1 space further, however walls, although can be build in a chain to build them further, can't connect other buildings to them.
For Red Alert, the structures can be placed 1 square further from other buildings. Naval buildings can be placed further while fake buildings, naval buildings and walls don't provide build expansion unless you're placing more walls there.

(click "See full size image" to open the pdf)These are the manuals of the original unremastered versions, but they're still 99% accurate, and contain all the basics for playing the games. One of the only things that won't be in there is the added build queueing stuff.
You learn how the game works and then use that knowledge to your advantage.
Silos are always a good option even if you just want to have a good looking base. And if you daisy-chain silos or sandbags you can even use choke points to your advantage with defences. The important part is cheap and fast to build.
