Sometimes they are used as mission objectives, but they provide no benefit.
I think they were originally going to be in the game to heal troops, but it got cut.
The only actual practical purpose it has, since it is technically a research center for tiberium related illnesses, is that it can store 100 credits of tiberium. The bio lab can do this too.
As for what might have been intended, well, the devs likely intended buildings to be upgradeable like in Dune II, but, unlike in Dune II, this would result in a visually distinctive Advanced version. This concept can still clearly be seen on the similarities of the Communications Center and Power Plant and their Advanced variants. Similarly, the Hospital shares its basic design with the Bio-Research Laboratory, and was most likely meant to be upgraded to it. Though for what purpose, we will most likely never know.
I believe the Playstation Sega Saturn version has a cheat that allows you to build the bio lab, and it then allows you to produce visceroids from your vehicle factories, but that was just a bit of fun.
That cheat is for the Saturn version of the game. It would have been great to see it on the PS1 too.
Never knew about the Tiberium storage. But I do remember seeing something about hospitals being intended to heal troops but it got cut.
Never saw that on Playstation either!! Wish I knew >:D
