How to find an enemy stealth tank?
As the title says. Do some units or buildings appear to have stealth detection?

Infantry and base defences will spot them if the Stealth Tank moves next to them.

If you're against the AI in SP missions, they'll often shoot at you if you enter their weapons range, making light vehicles like Humvees and Buggies good for sniffing out that one Stealth Tank that's sitting in the corner of a map.

If the problem is Stealth Tanks slipping into your base, spreading out minigunners and defensive buildings so there are no gaps will spot any trying to slip in.

Comms centers detect them too.

You should probably elaborate that they detect Stealth Tanks that touch the building. You kind of made it sound like it shows them on the minimap :p

Bizarrely, though, the advanced comm centers doesn't detect them :steamfacepalm:

Yeah, you're right. The post before mine said "if the stealth tank moves next to them" when talking about infantry/base defenses. Was just adding comms into the list.

But the minimap used to be able to detect stealth in the original (and submerged units in RA) when scanning with the cursor... was this fixed in the remasters? I had a lot of fun surprising those people hiding their last stealth unit.

Wow, that's cool to know. I wonder why would they remove a feature as important as this one. 🤔
I just had an interesting occurrence, a buggy picked up a crate which stealthed it. Said buggy moved into the tile adjacent to a hostile Comms Center, yet it wasn't revealed.

Does their adjacent stealth detection extend only to Stealth Tanks?

Strange. It should reveal the stealth buggy. I think I had a stealth APC once (with engineers and commando inside!) and it got discovered before it uncloaks.

I'll have to keep an eye out and see if I can repeat it.
So, money where my mouth is and all that.

I sent a Stealth Tank next to a hostile Comms Centre and it was not "revealed" in the traditional sense, where it loses it's cloak.

What did happen is hostile units in weapons range fired on the Stealth Tank so long as it is adjacent to the Comms Centre, and also moving. Oddly enough, AI units stop firing once you stop moving whilst next to the Comms Centre.

I've played C&C all the way back in '98, and there's always something new to stumble on. I may have to fire up the classic versions and see how this behaviour is on there at some point.

It was among the bugs we reported to the dev team, so I'm fairly sure that got fixed, yes :)

That's how it works, yes, but it's not just for the AI; when an enemy Stealth Tank passes next to your defences or Comm Centre, nearby units owned by you will also shoot at it. Detecting is not the same as uncloaking.

It's a strange edge case, considering every other stealth detection mechanic in C&C1 actively uncloaks the target.

Not much to be done about it now of course, but still, weird.

It doesn't, actually. I think it only uncloaks when actually being shot at. When stealth tanks pass by infantry you might see a slight shimmer but it won't fully uncloak either.

I remember my enemy stealth tank passed my defenses or infantry simply showed me the stealth tank as the dark-green silhouette. Same goes when a vehicle bumped into the stealth tank, it will only appear as the silhouette for a split second. The stealth tank didn't uncloak, my units simply saw it.

They do however, uncloak when they run over an infantry.
Huh.

Guess we can scratch this up to my memories from 20 years ago being unreliable, lol.

Nothing to see here.

Typical quote of a stealth tank driver :D
