Destructible trees
I've noticed some trees can be destroyed and burned, but others are indestructible. The former seems to only apply to desert maps... but I'm not completely sure.

Anyone know more about how this works?

Trees can be destroyed or burned except the ones that are in a bunch or a blossom tree.

I guess this only applies to TD though, not RA.

No, I know for certain that there's one particular Allied campaign mission where the AI destroys a tree near your base when they move towards it. But that's the only one I know of.

You can also destroy trees with the MAD tank or commando. Try playing the TD spec ops mission with the laser orcas, use your starting gang of commandos to shoot a tree and it'll be gone before your war factory is done.

The mission where you need to capture the command post and also the first secret ant mission where an ant will destroy a tree.

I know it was possible in Red Alert, at least the original one where I used to make a cheating custom skirmish map in my old windows98 where the map gives advantage if you destroy trees and the skirmish AI never does that.

It's funny I never noticed this behavior back in the early C&C days, lol

The mission which turns out to be 2 missions back to back, yes. But I played the first secret mission last Monday, I didn't notice any ant destroying a tree, at least as far as I'd explored.

I also haven't noticed any trees being destroyed by the MAD-tank though. Even though I quickly stopped building them as soon as I realized they are one of the least useful ones anyway.

I used the tree destroying trick to make a back path on the Allied mission where you have to infiltrate the soviet base command post with the 4 nukes around it, but this was back in 1998 or so when I barely knew how to play the game.

What I noticed lately is that some trees can't be fully destroyed. In particular, if you use flame weapons, the trees will turn into charred remains which cannot be then destroyed. It definitely happens in TD, not 100% sure about RA.

  • Trees can be destroyed in both games.
  • Only single trees can be destroyed. The bigger clumps of trees can not.
  • Blossom Trees can't be destroyed, even if not mutated yet. They are simply a different type of object to the game, and not a real tree.
  • Destroying a tree with a flame-based weapon will turn it into a charred tree. Charred trees are invulnerable to all further damage, and can thus not be destroyed.
  • Trees have 600 hit points. Bullets will not damage them; you need some kind of explosives like grenades or tank shells.
  • Despite making infantry burn on death, both the Obelisk laser and the Ion Cannon will destroy trees, rather than burning them. Nukes, however, specifically deal fire damage, so they will burn trees.
  • In the original game, just igniting a tree once would set it on fire, and after a while it would turn into a charred tree. In the Remaster, this was changed; trees can no longer be ignited permanently, and will only char when the final damage to them is dealt with a flame weapon.

Same. It makes it so much easier to slip your tanks through to the northeast corner and finally to the nuke silo itself :)

Apparently Tanya is an exception to this rule because I was able to destroy trees with her... but we're talking about Tanya bullets here... :D

    Thanks for the clarification!

It's all about the warhead they use internally. "SmallArms" is the one that can't damage it, but the Commando units don't use that. C&C1 Commandos can also destroy trees.
