it's very similar, the main differences are a different setting and a lot more naval units

Errr, no. There aren't more naval units in RA1.

Red Alert 1 is not silly. It starts in alternate WW2 and ends with relatively modern stuff. The gameplay is really tight and fun. They're not all that similar. Units and gamemechanics and even the factions are fairly different.
RA1 was the first RTS I ever played and it's worth it for the story alone. Both games are worth playing, honestly.
Stalin is really believable.

I'm guessing the guy you're replying to misread and is comparing red alert with c&c
As someone who played RA2 before starting RA1: RA1 feels slower paced and more grounded, since it has less options (e.g. there is basically no air play, and naval is pretty bleak as well, no 'crazy' units like dolphins, ivans, chrono legionnaire) and is less fun for me at least. Personally the campaign is also kinda repetitive compared to the diverse locations and scenarios RA2 had. With the Remaster however it might still be worth it, since you have the RA2-style production bar for example.

I still play RA2/YR over CNCnet, has a pretty solid playerbase. Pretty sure RA2/YR has more naval units.

Biggest difference is the artstyle and some game mechanics, not nearly as advanced as RA2. Dune 2000 is kinda like RA1.

both factions have access to a few air options and naval (particularly Allies) is pretty strong. You definitely can't ignore the air, or sea unless playing on a completely landlocked map.
But no it doesn't have kitschy units like psychic dolphins... you can still play RA2 if you want that stuff

I would say RA1 is gritty, it has a far more serious tone then RA2 which is more whacky!

RA1 is gritty, yes. Makes you feel like you're right there, in those icy trenches. It has an immersive bleak atmosphere that's very much in contrast to RA2's light-hearted tone.

As for gameplay... eh, it's a bit of a tank spam game :p

You spelled MIG Rush wrong.
mig rush?

just played openRa which should be pretty close to original RA
i cant see how that would work as it needs plenty of buildings and planes die so quickly
tank rush seems way more viable
