So if this is to be believed, Dune 2 was in fact "Command & Conquer 0."
But I think C&C0 was actually the internal project name for Red Alert 1, since it was meant as C&C's prequel.
btw, I provided Beige Mongfish (aka No Strings Prd) with that leaflet scan; it's from my own Dune II box. The full collection of these "News & Notes" newsletters, as far as they've been retrieved, can be found here:
https://archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22Westwood+Studios%22&and%5B%5D=mediatype%3A%22texts%22
That's issues 1, 2, 5 and 7. I tracked down #4 too now, and it's in the mail on the way to me, so that'll be scanned and added soon as well.
Issue 8 and 9 were on their website, and are preserved here[www.cncworld.org].
They just changed their mind so they could make RA2.
And the files don't lie. There are traces of a folder name "C&C0" found inside Red Alert binaries.
[edit]
From the bowels of the game.dat (the DOS game executable) of the recently uncovered Red Alert beta 0.09c:
C:\PROJECTS\C&Czero\wwflat32\font\font.cpp
c:\projects\c&czero\wwflat32\include\gbuffer.h
c:\projects\c&czero\wwflat32\include\vbuffer.h
c:\projects\c&czero\wwflat32\include\wwstd.h
(Redditors might hear us and lynch us! >_< )
Really though, some memes are a bit overdone but it's actually a pretty nice place overall.
Issue: OP believes that this re-release (called a 'remaster' in promotional parlance) of beloved old-school Command & Conquer Series (first 2 games) in a collection for $20 USD (as of time of writing this) is not a useful value for fans due to the existence of the 'OpenRA' project.
Let's look at OpenRA, shall we?
https://www.openra.net/about/
On a nightly basis, the current population reaches a (brief) peak of 200+ players online, many of them spectating or waiting for an open slot in a game to play.
The features of OpenRA are quite impressive, but lack many of the features present in this remaster (upscaled cutscenes, etc). However, simple upscaling via AI algorithms (like waifu2x for instance) is not only possible but can be batch-scripted fairly easily if one knows how to do so. That said, there's a variety of algorithms including ones meant to be used on low-resolution pixel art.
The single largest benefit that OpenRA offers is that it is completely FLOSS (Free and Libre Open Source Software) without corporate influences or the whims of Electronic Arts.
Let's look at the remaster, shall we?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1213210/Command__Conquer_Remastered_Collection/
Going purely by what the Steam page says.
-The store page says that Electronic Arts (EA) is publishing this. Many people have valid objections against supporting EA and their continued destruction of great gaming studios (RIP Visceral Studios, never forget) and soon-to-be-RIP of BioWare (which has already driven away all of their original talent over the past decade or so).
It is perfectly ok to have a strong moral objection to supporting EA and thus NOT support this remaster.
-Bonus Gallery with B-roll (rejected takes) and unreleased music.
-Remastered music by the original composer,
-Official modding support via the Steam Workshop is hindered by the EULA.
Most specifically not only can EA profit from user mods (perpetual = forever) but can do so WITHOUT ATTRIBUTION meaning you won't even get credit for the work you did for them! And this is why most modders will soundly reject ever working on mods for this game or porting them over. This loss of control is the single biggest reason why this 'modding support' is NOT a selling feature and actually a huge DETRIMENT to this remaster, giving a very strong point to playing OpenRA instead.
-Upscaled cinematics is NOT a selling point. You can (again) use an AI upscaler available free on the internet to do it for you and it would output similar/better results. Or just watch them on YouTube. For me personally, the charm of old-school grainy footage is part of the appeal of the older series. If it isn't completely redone (only AI-upscaled) then it isn't worth it. Lazy EA is lazy.
-Enhanced Sidebar UI is NOT a selling point. It is the same thing done by OpenRA (but better) for years now.
-Jukebox is NOT a selling point. If you want music you can either replace the files yourself via OpenRA or you can just listen to your own music in your player of choice while playing the game (turning off in-game music).
-Custom game lobbies is a STANDARD FEATURE and shouldn't even be a 'bullet point' but it is more of a mark against modern gaming than a selling point.
-Leaderboards are NOT a selling point. Get that hot garbage out of here. OpenRA already does that and much more.
-Replays & Observer mode are NOT selling points. Standard part of OpenRA for years now.
-Console missions on PC. This is additional content (however barebones it is) available officially and legally. OpenRA Mods can re-create this (if they wanted to) so it is up to the end-user if this is worth it for them.
-Console cinematics. Ok what happened to upscaled cinematics? I guess they upscaled these also. More console ports so up to you.
-Map editor, something C&C has had for decades. Nothing to see here.
-New Mission Selection screen? You w0t m8? Let me laugh harder.
-Camera Zoom as a feature. That's how much they're padding out this bullet point list. Standard feature in OpenRA.
-Skirmish Mode is meh. You're fighting AI instead of other players so up to you.
-Customizable Hotkeys. Yes they're actually touting a bog-standard PC gaming feature as a selling point. OpenRA has had this for years.
-EVA re-recorded. Just a nitpick but 'high definition' audio doesn't exist. Definition is exclusively for visual not sound. The correct term is 'high fidelity' which refers to audio improvements. As for the re-recording this is a very nice touch. Shows some actual effort for once.
-Control improvements already done by OpenRA, next!
-Nothing else in their list is something that hasn't been done by OpenRA and better. Steam Trading Cards (if anyone cares about those) are there. Whooo.
So doing a very quick summary of ACTUAL selling points of the remaster:
-Console missions & cinematics officially legally available on PC
-Skirmish mode against AI
-EVA re-recorded lines in HIGH FIDELITY AUDIO
-Steam Trading Cards/Achievements
-Bonus Gallary with B-roll footage and unused music
-Remastered music by the original composer(s).
So if any of those points are worth $20 USD for you then buy it.
If anyone is buying this on the flimsy HOPE that EA will actually care enough to remaster others should just stop right now. It won't happen. This game won't ever be as profitable as some gamblebox-laden sports game. It isn't a priority for EA and you know it. Just stop and get some help for that Stockholm Syndrome of yours. E-begging for scraps of re-releases of older games from corporate overlords isn't how to be a real gamer. Grow a spine and have some dignity.
If they are going to remaster the game, they're going to do so exclusively at their whim and desire based on how cheaply and easily they can make profit off of it. That's it. There's zero guarantees of anything and the market for C&C isn't anywhere near as big or profitable compared to releasing a trashy mobile knockoff using the C&C name.
So based on all that...eh. For me this is a hard pass personally.
-I'd rather remake the console missions myself (or play a mod in OpenRA that has already done that) instead.
-I'll watch cinematics on YouTube or grab them and convert them for use myself (AI upscaling ftw).
-EVA audio is cute, will do the same as cinematics.
-I don't care about Steam cards or ♥♥♥♥.
-Modding is severely hindered here due to EULA so that's a hard pass.
-I'll listen to the music on YT or buy the physical music copy officially if I want to ONLY support the composer.
-I don't care about some bonus gallery, will watch it on YT instead.
So if you read this wall of text, go outside and get some fresh air! Good luck!
That's unfortunate, but I would rather put up with those (knowing they will eventually be fixed) than to buy in to a remaster that hurts modders (and players) as well as supporting EA, a publisher notorious for shutting down older games/servers at their whim with little to no advance notice or compensation of any kind.
Tell me how this remaster will hurt modders? lol
This remaster will also help Openra. They will 100% grab the code and use the new engine for their Mod..
