Original Xbox version has slow world rendering problems.
I think it's to do with the Xbox having trouble reading the disk or something (I'm not sure though as my other OG Xbox games work just fine) but my GTA 3 & Vice City double pack version of the latter has a lot of trouble loading parts of the map when I drive to them, usually appearing as their far away low res models up close, sometimes with world holes before switching to the main geometry. This is running on an actual OG Xbox, not my 360 or Xbox One.

Worst case scenario is that it goes to an outright loading screen if it fails to pop in the landscape in time. Completing certain missions also causes the game to lag like hell (about 1 to 5 FPS max) while the mission passed screen is active. it's rather frustrating. I couldn't see any visible scratches on the disk when I looked.

I tried googling my issue but found nothing: only advice for the PC version and those running the Xbox version on Xbone or Xenia.

On a side note, the manual says Bille Jean is on the soundtrack like in the PS2 release but that's a flat-out stinking lie because when I got into the car at the start where it plays, a different song played instead. Are all Xbox versions one of the ones where the song was removed and they didn't bother updating the manual or is it something else? EDIT: forget this side note: the song is in the game, but it bugged out and didn't play at the beginning like on PS2 or modded PC.

Ah the double pack for xbox, there’re few bug fixes in that version but i would stay away from it in term of contents. The low res you’re facing is interesting cuz normally this is dics reading trouble but the more i read the more i haven’t heard off. I ran a Digital copy of OG Xbox original on my xbox 360 (which considered to be emulation) ran normally except for when it forced to spawn more stuff like side mission or entering extreme detail area like Little Haitti then it ran 10-15 FPS.

Interesting. Thanks for the info, though it is a bit late now. Maybe I can find cheaper copies of the OG Xbox disk (OG as in not the double pack) versions at CEX: they certainly had the OG PS2 versions but while I do have a PS2 now, I like the Xbox better. (I do have the PS2 ports of my PSP GTA games though, both disk & emulated)

I was also wrong about Billie Jean: it does play in my copy of the game I found out after making the original post but for some reason it didn't play first in the car by Ken's office when starting a new game despite being on the right station: I checked youtube to make sure I was taking the right car but I only found out the song wasn't removed on my copy as it did play when listening to Flash FM later on.

It’s Not Billie Jean or Cut songs i was talking about because i know for a fact they don't touch it (After Running With Night got Axed it will take few more years for the Cut Song Event to happen) but The Double Pack is indeed Haitian Friendly. The only thing Xbox Version Exclusively have right now are those Moving Fingers in Cutscenes ( I ♥♥♥♥ you not i believe that they actually Coded those thing to move not rendering it like most believed) and VC Intro that was remake for Xbox, other than that most thing have already Mod to PC or Fixed. VC on OG Xbox is neat but the fact that they use GTA III Textures and Particles is frankly very weird and lazy, not even mention they broke Tommy Idle Animation and His Up Yours Gesture to become Claude Watch out Gesture. The Highly Detail Car Texures also Bug in some instances.

I see. I wonder what causes the world to load in so slowly then and the mission passed screen (I think it was indeed around Little Havana or Little Hatti it happens most of the time) to lag out? I checked the disk for dirt or damage and couldn't see any, unless I wasn't looking hard enough. Other games on my Xbox load and run just fine, including others on Renderware, chief among them Shadow the Hedgehog.

clean your xbox lens. This has happened to both my PS2 and Xbox. alternatively the disc could be damaged or dirty.

I said twice already that I checked the disk and couldn't find anything wrong and that other games work fine. However, I will check the disk again and see if the lens needs cleaning. What's the best way to clean the laser lens?

By any chances you’re using an HDMI cable ? Just got my xbox controller fix to do some test and i think i understand why this occured, not disk problem like i thought. In the old comment i was telling you my emulation with a Xbox 360 Color cable so it rendered horribly (Emulation due to Xbox360) but have a bit more FPS while maintainng consistence Texture. HDMI Cable on the other hand render badly and causing more FPS drop for Better but slow Texture rendering. This rule will not change even if you choose the Wide Screen option. In conclusion VC xbox can’t run normally with mordern HD cable.

I thought I was using an AV scart cable? It could be an HDMI one but I the name of my Xbox channel implies otherwise: AV2 Component. That or Cable. I can't remember: one of them displays only on Black & white but the other one which I am using is in color.

Was your AV scart cable have any indication of being part of xbox brand or not or was that cable even a old ♥♥♥♥♥♥ unsupport for Wide Screen like mine ? Mine have a clear text indication that it was part of the Brand and being ♥♥♥♥♥♥ but the HDMI i was testing is a spare one i got from buying new computer screen. Just like i concluded any modern or HD cable will break the game.

I'd need to check. My OG Xbox stretches the image to give me decent widescreen on my big LCD TV, but my 360 does not (at least when playing OG Xbox games if I remember right)
