Grand Theft Auto III

Which mod - Definitive Edition, The Improved Classic or RE3?
Which is considered the best way to play it nowadays? Most up to date, faithful to PS2, plus QOL changes would be ideal.

Steam deck compatibility would be a plus (stock/ProtonGE/whatever)

I would go with with the Definitive Edition Project. It worked great for playing III and San Andreas for me. It does have some of the PS 2 faithfulness.

DE project uses Xbox models and textures, so if you want the PS2 look it's not entirely faithful. Does look objectively better though IMO, especially the vehicles and plants.

If you want the PS2 look of the game, then try my patch :

You can have the game like it was on PS2, or choose the Xbox feeling and add the graphic and gameplay enhancements too.

I'd say re3 is the best way to play this game on modern systems, only requires a fresh install and drag and drop the files.

Do you need the definitive edition version of the game? I don't, I have the regular GTAIII version, and that patch does nothing for me.

Depends on which mod you download. It's pretty clear on the website.

You can try this! It's a PS2 version of GTA III with many fixes with original uncompressed textures and sounds. You still have to buy GTA III to run this on steam. Once you have installed your GTA, replace files with these ones ;)
