How does the monolith work?

Ive been staring at this flashy monolith and foxes for the past 30 minutes and I dont know what I'm supposed to be seeing. Is the any way to activate manually or what?

It was at x5 speed the entire 30 minutes.

1. Are you in the current beta? it should say "Betalith" next to your game. 2. are there any animals next to your monolith? cause if there are no creatures next to it, it basically does nothing but flash and send out pulses every so often
