I dunno about the above comment, but i'll try to explain it simply for you guys;

Open a Culture's main tab, and access the "Onomastics" tab, inbetween "Kingdoms" and "Interesting Characters".

From there, you will be shown exactly how the game determines the names of each unit. By default, you will have "Unit Names" selected. The tabs at the top of the menu let you change between Units, Kingdoms, Clans, Villages, and Families. The Strings of "Building Glyphs" are little quirks, consonants, vowels, gender specifications, hyphens, that you can play around with.

Click on a Building Glyph to Add or Remove it to the language string. Once added, you can drag it to the left or right, or click on the 2nd Building Glyph to add more variations to the name string. It's pretty confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

The Gear Icon with the Box that says "building glyphs editor" is the example box, and shows how the name will come out when randomly generated on creation of the unit, kingdom, etc.
