Well if there was a tool tip at the monolith, people would know and stop asking that particular question. I was wondering the same thing but didn't bother to ask, so thanks for the info anyways ^^

The monolith has no confirmed purpose (according to the wiki it increases population growth by x1, in other words... nothing). It lights up red one month of the year. It might be getting a true purpose in the next update as it featured in some artwork, but not confirmed.
