Any tips for someone starting their first playthrough?
Hello, just picked up the game on the winter sale and going to jump in soon. Just curious if there are any things that might be good to know for a new player that might not be immediately obvious.

Please no spoilers, thanks.

I just finished my first playthrough less than an hour ago! I think that for the first playthrough, it is good enough to learn as you go during Act I. You will be able to decide for yourself whether you would like to mostly follow the main story or engage in some side stories here and there.

But, if you'd like to be very thorough from the start and possibly unlock more options that may be useful later on, it would be helpful to try doing all conversations and interactions that do not take up time before committing to the ones that take longer. The ones that take longer usually involve food or have the option of saying something like, "Perhaps later." or "Not now." I am starting my second playthrough to check some missed routes and achievements and am doing this myself.

I hope you enjoy the game!

The dialog lines unlocked by your background and traits (the ones with the little icon before them) aren't always the best ones. Think about what you're saying and to whom. Are they in the mood for a bit of pointless theological trivia?

Also you've probably figured it out, but plenty of players seem to miss it: Pressing Tab when underlined text shows up will open the glossary, which will give you a definition of the term (or a picture of the character mentioned). You can also do this by clicking the underlined text, but you might accidentally choose a dialog option or move the conversation forward if you do that, so Tab's usually better.

Is there a way to see whether a person would like certain dialogue or is that just something you're supposed to figure out from what they are saying to you?

Thank you for that tip! I was manually checking the Glossary and would accidentally bring up the references not knowing which key I pressed. Using Tab for my second playthrough has been very helpful!

You can figure it out as you speak with each character. You will see from conversations with them if there is a background-related dialogue option. As ahueonao alluded to, choosing a background-related dialogue option for conversations does not necessarily guarantee success, although I think it does add colour to the story. I would not worry about it for the first playthrough since the characters have different personalities, and you cannot please everyone. If you are interested in achievements though, certain ones can only be acquired by having a specific background.
