Do any of you kids
even know what Record of the Lodoss War is?

There was not one, but two (three if you count the chibi shorts). Tell me what you know about Ashram, the dark baker!

I remember the chibi shorts coming from the anime that focused on spark's role play, and there was some running joke about a dark elf trying to steal the purple haired girl's bread, I think? Dunno, that was a long time ago. I remember that the sequel/retelling was backbreakingly boring when compared to its progenitor.

No, no, you've proven yourself. You are worthy.
It was a long time ago, I' m mostly just playing a role anyway. The Oldtaku gatekeeper.

I've watched the original long time ago. Since owning this, I went back and started re-watching Record of Lodoss War and Crystania. Going to move over to Heroic Knight then to maybe Rune Soldier.

Lol, well, I suppose the original topic was directed at younger people, I clearly proven I am approaching the ranks of the middle aged, so much so, that my memory can't even recall the details clearly.

No idea.

First Anime I ever bought physical copies of. I still have the VHS tapes of both seasons I got from Sun Coast. Record of Grancrest War was made by the same guy and recently made in to an anime different world but it has some of the same feel. I know a bit about this IP.

Oh yeah, I remember sun coast.

I got the Oh My Goddess OVAs there, two discs, $25 dollars each for 5 total 22 min episodes.

Good times, pricey times, but good times.

Nah man, the chibi shorts are part of the second one.

The first time I saw Record of Lodoss War was at a convention between 1993 and 1996. Probably 1993 since the first OVA came out in like 1990 so it would have been newish (for Americans) in 1993. They were screening it and a bunch of other ♥♥♥♥ but I only watched Record of Lodoss War because A) I love elves and drow and B) I was killing time to wait on a signing.

Ashram is a villain and one of my favorite characters because we had the same waifu. He was a black knight so I'm not sure why you're calling him a dark baker. I assume to sniff out the plebs. If that's what you're doing edit this quote and I'll delete this paragraph.

It's actually one of the few things I remember about it, in one of chibi shorts he says something (very dramatically) about being Ashram the dark baker.

Truth be told, I don't really remember the anime other than there as an anime proper and an OVA, and that I liked it at the time. That time probably being between 96 and 98. I had a buddy that bought them both, I watched them with him.

True, but they were kind of their own thing, ran in between.

Kind of like how The Adventures of Mini-Goddess is technically part of the AH My Goddess story, but not really. (not a great example, because that really is it's own anime, not just shorts, well it is just shorts, but on their own)

I remember some of my friends being shocked that he cried when Pirotess died. I was like ofc he cried, the hottest girl in the series is dead. I'm not spoiler tagging that because it's a 30 year old anime at this point.

Sounds like you started the series with the followup which iirc was 1998. The original OVA was 1990. Both are good but as it tends to happen the first one I saw is still my favorite. Nostalgia works like that I guess.

I remember watching Record of Lodoss War on VHS tapes back in the day- you know, the grand old days where MAYBE you'd get like three or four episodes of a series on a tape at a time. Deedlit was everywhere in the anime fandom at the time, but I remember liking Pirotess better. Ugh, I really need to revisit the series- I barely remember anything anymore. I just remember thinking the name 'Woodchuck' was silly x_x
...and all I remember from the chibi stuff was just... antics with a dark elf either trying to lure the heroes with candy or stealing their candy or something.

The OVA is the only one that matters.

Wow wasn't even aware that Rune Soldier was related. The art, tone and story are so widely different. Would be like if you told me Slayers was also in the same universe...
