But why?
Not that I'm against it or anything. Just wondering why a lodoss war game is suddenly coming out of nowhere in 2020.

The original work celebrated its 30th anniversary last year (2019), and various commemorative events were held.
In addition, a new book of the original has been released for the first time in 12 years.

In line with that, this game was also planned and developed as a celebration of the 30th anniversary.
It seems that the release was delayed, but I feel that it will be a great game.

I think it will be a very good game, but not too long in terms of length.

We live in times when a song from 1996 becomes a meme after over 20 years.
At this point I just chuckle when I recognise something old.

And press the buy button once I know that like the end product.

Yes, I second the question of @Citizen Kill "But WHY?" or better put "WHY LIKE THIS?!"
Such a GLORIOUS series deserve a little better: i mean, i love retro pixel art style when done properly, and the trailer shows on occasion some nice animations for a fireball, but this prototype was already seen in 2018 among all the teaser projects for Lodoss anniversary... Metroidvania? Wonderful!!! There can be GREAT games in that genre like Symphony of the Night or The Messenger, but could you please make it with some depth and QUALITY, following exactly the series 'campaign', including ALL enemies and bosses from the original series, and allowing us to play with at least the five (5) main characters?!?! SHOW SOME RESPECT TO THE ORIGINAL SERIES!! There's some pp that still remember! If you're doing it, at least do it WELL!!!!! not just to exploit and monetize nostalgia, DO IT WELL!!!

It's just too easy to get lost in a daydream about all the possibilities for contemporary game releases under this franchise. I am excited for this one, and I will likely enjoy it.. But I am continually left wondering "what if?"

"According to Playism, who’s publishing Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, this game will fill in the gaps from the most recent novel in the series, which released in Japan in August 2019. As Deedlit explores this strange labyrinth, she’ll encounter Ghim and more of her friends and will need to navigate the maze with the help of the spirits Sylph and Salamander."

So it is respecting the series. Just not the ova or tv versions.

I haven't read the novels only seen the OVA, but does Ghim not die in the books?

The only novel available in the US is Grey Witch. Still need to read it.
But, in the end, if the new novel is not a sequel or in a place after that death, then until someone can figure that out we won't know.

i don't know why it released, but i will sure as hell buy it :p

I've been wanting to buy The Grey Witch as well. I hope they translate the rest of the books at some point, although that seems unlikely if the first one didn't sell well enough.
The Lodoss TV anime adapted the rest of the books after the Grey Witch and Shooting Star stories where it mostly focuses on Spark and his companions. Parn, Slayn and Deedlit are reduced to supporting characters in the later books from my understanding.

While we're on the subject, what is considered canon really in the Lodoss franchise? Because both the OVA and TV series have some major differences in their adaption of the novels and telling of the main story. Is it only the novels and tabletop RPG that is canon? Will this game be considered canon I wonder?
Omoikane Mar 9, 2020 @ 9:10am
Good question. My guess it the ttrpg is first in what can be considered canon and the novels act as adaptations in a way.
