Legit unplayable, despite being right up my alley
Got the chance to test the game at a friend's PC, and bloody hell this game one-ups some of Valheim's crappy design choices and cranks it up to 11.

I lasted a good 40 minutes before I gave up due to these frustrating aspects:

- Excessive amounts of bloom and the washed-out filter that can't be disabled through the settings. We did partially disable it thanks to a ReShade preset after some research, but was that really necessary to disable such a simple thing? You also can't disable the "eye adaptation" effect that makes dark/light transitions outright physically painful when coupled with the bloom.

- The camera stutters if the FPS goes above 60. Even though we did change some settings in the Nvidia Control Panel, it still feels as if the game plays at 20 FPS when there is camera movement.

- Can't hold buttons to swing/collect items/attack automatically. You also can't aim a wand or a bomb before using it. Maybe we somehow missed the keybind despite checking it twice over. Seems fine for staffs and bows, though.

- Can't hold a torch while using a one-handed weapon. Really?

- Can't disable the vignette/blurry borders effect for the entire screen.

TL;DR: Game's great if certain graphical settings are added and expanded. Some QoL adjustments should be added.

yeah the game needs about another year in the oven, I personally put it down for now since the minor irritations started really adding up

Taken a break from it due to those things myself. Tried to stay with it since at it's core its a good game, but these things add up.

According to the latest news, the camera stutters if your FPS goes above 60. They are looking into it. It has nothing to do with the specs. His monitor's refresh rate is 144 hz, and with the settings we adjusted, we were getting around 80-90 FPS. It was feeling like 20-30 due to the stuttering unless the FPS dropped to 60 to 70 range. They simply messed something up related to the camera controls.

You also can't limit FPS in the game on top of the 5-6 missing graphical options. You have to use an external tool or Nvidia Control Panel to limit it. Are we sure this game came out in 2024?

The only actions you can hold to perform when gathering, yes. Mining and chopping. The Hatchet (?) you get at the start counts as a weapon, for example, and won't autoswing if you want to use it for breaking objects. Even though it's great to break objects with due to its animation and strength. Wands don't autoswing. Torches, too.

There is nothing you can defend about this game when it comes to the points I provided. "Works well on my machine" isn't an argument, especially since you gave absolutely no details apart from your GPU. The game does work well at 60 FPS, but I'm sure my friend didn't buy a 144 Hz monitor and a 3060 Ti to play games at 60 FPS. Last time I asked, he also had a Ryzen 7 5800X with 32 gigs of RAM along.

I'm sure you didn't buy a 3080 to play games at 60 FPS either, if I would take a guess. At least not unless you prefer to play in high resolutions.

The game is good, but devs need to do some serious work to iron out the wrinkles.

I agree with every point you listed, but "legit unplayable"? Come on. :)

Exactly. They are all good points, but OP is being a bit over-dramatic...

I'm glad I didn't buy it myself (even though my friend asked me to, before we tried it together) only to find out the things I mentioned after I paid for it. I'll probably buy it once they do fix the issues and add options for the bloom, vignette and eye adaptation, though.

It’s okay, you just didn’t understand what they were saying. Maybe read the OP before commenting.

Bloom, fog leak is worse with older pc's according to devs.

For it being so unplayable, it's awfully strange then that I managed to make it to level 20 on my mid-range machine (Asus Zenbook running with 16m Ram, and a AMD Ryzen 9, hardly a gaming PC), w/out having to compromise graphics settings or getting less than 60-90 FPS steadily. The bloom effects are admitedtly a bit extreme, but I actually kind of like how it makes the world more immersive. Because that is what it is like to walk out of a dark cave into a sunny area. And you can absolutely aim wands and bombs, just point them at the center of the screen. It's not hard at all.

*complains about the torch* never mind that there is a whole potion that takes place of the torch...

i dont have that stutter, it maxes out on say 130 and lowest 60 it drops when it changes to dusk and dawn. but other than that its super smooth, all graphic setting at max vsync off ofc (freesync). 3060 is a weak card tho, dont go expecting that to pull you into 144hz area, waste of monitor.

ofc it doesnt autoswing in combat, thats not how you fight, you block and dodge. autoswing combat is pointless. gathering is where autoswing is important and thats already in.

none of your points are legit imo. and overuse of bloom that has to be a monitor calibration thing because i just dont see it. sure there is fog sometime in the forest and in the shroud but that looks great. i have no halos around lightsources or windows etc.

and you limit fps directly in nvidia settings, like i have a 143 max cap since my monitor only supports freesync between 45 and 144fps. whats the point of having a cap in the game ? only reason to cap is gsync or freesync or heatissues, so why would you need games to be independentlu capped ?, the cap also works better through the drivers.
