And yes the budding day is the only time you can gift your neighbors with food so far.
What I mean is after you have all ingredients selected and started the cooking process, in the upper right corner of the screen is displayed what is used up.
And the cooking is done when all ingredients have been listed as being in active use.
One thing I did notice is that, when experimenting, if you don't put enough ingredients in you will always get goop even though the indicator says it should make something. For me, I was trying to make tomato soup, I put in just enough tomatoes for the indicator to say tomato soup and it made goop, but when I tried again with more tomatoes it worked, so I'm guessing the fewer ingredients you use, the higher the chance of failure.
