- Grafis meski 16-Bit, tapi benar2 100% sempurna gak ada yang kendor, peningkatan lumayan besar dari artstyle yang sama.
- Musik emang kurang dramatis (terutama pada bagian klimaks), tapi perasaan nya, benar-benar dapat meski ada kekurangan tersebut, jadi hal penggiring itu bisa ditolerir.
- Gameplay dasar udah oke sesuai tema nya, tapi mungkin untuk bagian aksi nya, sepertinya perlu dinaiki lagi sensitifitas & kecepatan nya.

I can already tell this is one of the best titles 2023 will get. If you’re into narrative adventures, I urge you to give at least the demo a shot.

You know when you come across something so amazing, so incredible, that you just don't even know what to say about it? Like no words you can ever put on a paper, or speak, will be enough to do the product justice? For me, A Space for the Unbound is one of those games. I know I won’t manage to fully convey why I related to this experience so much, but if my ramblings here are enough to get even one of you to try this out, then it will have been worth it. And on that note, I will start with my strongest argument in favor of the game: you can pet, AND NAME, like 20 cats! You can also pet a duck and a couple of other animals. I know, I know, you’re already sold and probably buying the game right now, but since I like to write, I’ll just continue my review anyway!

A Space for the Unbound is a mostly 2D slice-of-life adventure game. You play as Atma, a high school senior in the late 90s rural Indonesia. As such, you get to walk around and interact with many elements from both that time period AND that location, which was an incredible experience. From jokes such as a computer getting disconnected in an internet café because the owner got a phone call to cultural references like Keroncong music, the game absolutely nails its setting. Exploring the town is a joy, and it’s all thanks to the extreme care put into even the smallest of details.

But while there are daily life elements that land the game within the slice-of-life category, don’t be mistaken: the story is anything but mundane. The store page says that the game “tells a story about overcoming anxiety, depression, and about the relationship between a boy and a girl with supernatural powers”. This is very accurate. Atma and his girlfriend, Raya, are at the center of the story. Most things revolve around them and the powers they have. The store page even lists one of them: the power to dive into people’s minds. And just like in games like Psychonauts, this is a concept that is explored extremely well in this game, with the player constantly diving into minds to advance the plot and help the characters as needed.

The story itself is a bit of a slow burn for sure, but despite that, it kept me hooked throughout, employing both dramatic bits regarding the supernatural elements and threats, as well as deeply personal ones, such as the aforementioned anxiety, depression and overall uncertainty of life. The story started off good, and it only got better and better. It’s rare for something to get me this emotionally invested to the point of just… feeling empty by the end, but A Space for the Unbound did it. And the positive steam reviews echo this sentiment, with plenty of folks saying they were very emotional or crying. The story does make use of some storytelling clichés that you might not be a fan of, but I’m of the belief that, as long as clichés are used correctly and do not feel like a cheap way out of a situation, then it’s totally fine. It’s hard to be entirely original. And before you ask, yes, this game did use them well.

I’m also pleased to say that the writing is really good, with some well thought out jokes and believable dialogues. As for the gameplay that moves all of this forward, it’s quite standard, but it works well. You move Atma in his mostly 2D plane, and you interact with people and objects. When you do, you bring up a context menu to choose your action, such as talk, interact or use an item. There are lots of interactable things throughout the game, and quite a few are just for worldbuilding, which I appreciate. You can also find shiny objects on the ground that work as collectibles for the game.

There are three main types of collectibles. The first one is bottle caps, of which there are 20. The second are YOMAN letters: a bubble gum brand running a promotion in which you have to get letters from wrappers. Last but not least, you have tales, which are pages from a fairy tale that is deeply interconnected with the story. You mostly get these from story events and from completing your bucket list, which you get in chapter 1. Some of the items there are story related, but a few are optional.

There’s also a motivation for completing all this past just achievements and trophies, which is that if you finish everything, you allegedly get an extra scene in the epilogue. Or you can just wait until it pops up on youtube. And while not formally a collectible, there are 25 animals you must pet throughout the game if you want to complete all bucket list items. The horror, I know, petting animals. All of these collectibles, and more, can be seen in the game’s excellent menu, which takes the form of a red book. In there, you can also find a map of the city and your inventory. It’s very nifty!

Every once in a while, the game will throw you a minigame to do. You’ll find yourself eating popcorn with your girlfriend, beating people up in self defense in and out of arcade games, and even taking part in court trials. Some of the minigames, especially the fights, can be tricky at times, but it’s mostly very easy. Plus, if you fail, you just automatically go back to right before you entered the minigame. Throughout the game you’ll also be solving puzzles to advance the story. Some of these do boil down to just walking somewhere, grabbing an item, then coming back with the correct item, which will be a bore for a few people, but some are quite imaginative and fun. None of them are hard either, so don’t worry about that. However, do expect quite a bit of running around or backtracking for items.

Normally, I would mind backtracking and running through the town multiple times, but… not here. Why? Partly because of the fact that the map is small, but mostly because of the absolutely stellar quality of the visuals, animations and especially the soundtrack. The game is an absolute JOY to look at! This is legitimately one of the best looking games I have had the pleasure to play recently. I could honestly gush about this for this entire review. But I won’t. …but I could.

But the real winner here is the soundtrack. At times it’s very calming, at times upbeat, at times it urges you to continue to your objective as fast as possible, and at times it’s just… silent. However the background music presents itself, you can be certain of one thing: it will always fit the mood the game is trying to go for. And in fact, the game’s attention to detail extends even to where the soundtrack is employed! For example: as soon as I enter the library, a place in which we are supposed to be silent, the soundtrack stops.

And the best thing I can tell you is that my issues with the game are honestly mostly nitpicks, such as the puzzle thing I mentioned, the fact you can’t hand in multiple items to NPCs at once, and the stealth sections (the game does have those) which are a bit of a drag. If you’re interested in the title, you should know that the story is divided into a prologue and 5 chapters, clocking in at around 10 to 12 hours. You should also know that the game has a demo on steam, so I highly recommend checking that out before you make any decisions about your purchase! Again, I can not state this enough: this game was an incredible experience, and unless 2023 is absolutely phenomenal, I can safely say I already found one of my top 10 games of the year. I really did like it that much.

What a wonderful game, I’ve never been more proud of a masterpiece created by a developer from my very own home country of Indonesia🥹 From the amazing storytelling elements and fun puzzles, down to the beautiful pixel art and sound design, everything was spectacular! They even had nods to other well-known video game titles as well as cultural Indonesian references which I found so delightful.

If you’re a fan of stories that provide a positive message but still remain grounded in reality in terms of how harsh life can be, as well as having pretty fleshed out 3-dimensional characters whose good and bad traits you can relate to, this is definitely the game for you! I was on the verge of tears by the end of it by how it tells such a beautiful story that I can very much relate to, and the imaginative and gorgeous pixel art added even more depth to that.

Gameplay was also great with how it mostly plays like a point-and-click adventure game with your character roaming around a town running errands and solving puzzles with items you’ve picked up along the way, and a very easy to understand map layout and menu interface. The puzzles aren’t too tough to figure out, but still provided enough of a challenge for me to satisfy my point-and-click adventure game cravings (the last I played one was Return to Monkey Island back in 2022🥲).

The side-quests were also really enjoyable and included solving puzzles and collecting items with fun li’l descriptions and upon completing them, will provide you bonus scenes of the main characters which I think is a great reward that provides better context of the relationship between the main characters. However, be warned that you might miss a collectable/puzzle to completing these side-quests so I suggest saving on each chapter before it gets to a “point of no return”.

My only nitpick is probably just of how the background can sometimes become jittery and a blur during the running animation which caused me a bit of a headache. I’m not really sure if it had to do with my resolution and graphical settings especially since I’m not very familiar with these things, but I’d just like to give a heads-up to people that tend to get motion sickness.

All in all, I recommend this game with a massively huge thumbs up with both its story and gameplay and is 1 of the best games I have played from last year. Definitely a MUST-PLAY in my book for adventure game enthusiasts!

A Space for the Unbound is an adventure game set in rural 1990’s Indonesia. It features a poignant narrative that focuses on mental health, whilst weaving in slice-of-life style gameplay. Despite beginning development in 2015, the developers’ hard work has clearly paid off. Set in rural 1990’s Indonesia, players follow Atma and Raya. The pair are near their graduation of High School and must start preparing for their futures. The story begins as a cozy adventure, exploring their small town of Loka City. Suddenly, a supernatural force seems to ruin it all, inserting itself into the lovers’ lives and breaking up the tranquil atmosphere. The two must further explore the deep rooted cause of this phantasmal occurrence and uncover not only its secrets, but also their own. Despite this wholesome beginning, and without spoilers, the narrative deeply explores the harshness of anxiety and depression, slowly delving into the human psyche, whilst simultaneously being a journey of self-discovery and maintaining its slice-of-life atmosphere.

A Space for the Unbound’s narrative is a tangled one, but it surprisingly manages to uncoil its many branches. With many aspects to piece together and many timelines, rifts and characters to remember, it would be easy to fall victim to its convolution. However, the narrative is conveyed clearly, often repeating titbits of important information over time to allow players to gain a solid grasp on the many happenings. None of this felt like over-exaggeration, hand-holding or patronising, but rather, it all blended effortlessly, creating a fantastic foundation to tell its poignant story. Overall, the narrative was not at all what I expected, and the game completely changes into what felt like a different game than in the early chapters. The characters are expertly written and over time, I felt empathetic towards them. Their hardship, their past experiences, it all felt vivid and realistic. Given the games’ length, they all experience great development and growth, allowing players to better understand them.

This game has an abundance of reading. Similar to a visual novel, but it does feature large chunks of gameplay through puzzles, mini-games and exploration. Atma also has the skill to be able to “spacedive,” meaning he can see the inner thoughts and stresses about characters he meets. These are usually interwoven with puzzles and further complicated by entering different timelines or “rifts.” You can also pet all of the animals in the game. Really, its also for an achievement! Pet every stray cat you come across, even dogs and ducks. What more could you want! There are a total of five chapters, but the difficulty of the puzzles ramps up after chapter 4. I was not necessarily a fan of this, and did need to resort to a guide for some things (that cursed mathematics equation!)

Minigames
Despite the large amount of dialogue, the gameplay is also engaging, and manages to create an enjoyable flow from start to finish through its many mini-games. The most common are quick-time events involving the precise and timed copying of select keys, or pressing a button when the moving cursor in a bar is green. This is how fighting transpires in the game, or the Future Fighter arcade game. At first, I enjoyed this arcade section, but for an achievement/optional side extra in the game, you must reach 1500 and 1700 points. Only gaining 100 points per battle, and with no extra lives, it is a slog to reach 1700 and the window of opportunity is very slim. Admittedly, I tried many times to achieve this, but that high score has still evaded me (one day… one day).

Other common mini-games include stealth sections. These are extremely simple and just involve staying still when an exclamation mark pops up. Bounce a ball with precision timing 70 times, answer quizzes or choose to do the extras and fulfil Raya’s bucket list. The mini-games inclusion helps solidify the cozy nature of the game, and accentuates its wholesome atmosphere (but only in early chapters).

Puzzles
For the most part, puzzles are decent. Most are inventory-based, involving searching through different timelines to retrieve items for a spacedive of a character in another timeline, etc. Collect evidence to convey in court, match up the cake to the description…. And complete a confusing mathematical equation. OK, the latter was not so great. Yes, maths is not my strong suit. But I have never come across such a solely mathematical puzzle in a game before. You must search the areas to find multiple hints to the equation such as N=1 (none of these examples are the actual formula) to solve multiple disjointed equations such as 14=2x+n or 4-7n=-1. There are MULTIPLE of these and fair to say, I had no idea what I am doing. There was no find x, or explanation. Just these varying formulas scattered everywhere that apparently led to a code. I appreciate the difference and complexity, but without a guide, I would have been stuck for an eternity.

Lack of a chapter select
Despite there being only five chapters, these chapters are very lengthy with enormous amounts of content to uncover. Some extra content and achievements are locked to specific chapters. I was not aware of this and always thought I could come back to parts of the town to complete them. Unfortunately, you cannot, and there is no chapter select (but there are manual save slots). Furthermore, I had apparently missed two of the cats to pet and it would be nice to see these added in on the map in a Newgame+ or underneath the chapter they were missed in.


The hand-drawn soft pixel art is stunning, and reminiscent of anime styles. It perfectly fits in with the 90s setting the game covers and there are many beautiful, pastel backdrops to screenshot in vibrant Loka City.

The characters are not voiced, but the backing audio is playful and retro-inspired. It fits well with the themes of the game, and the finale song is sure to create an emotive response.

Replayability value: Not really.. there are achievements but going back for these without a chapter select (and if you did not manually save each chapter) can be a pain, as it is a linear story and there is no auto text skip.


A Space for the Unbound is a unique game. Its chirpy pixel artstyle, cozy mini-games and many cats to pet give the impression it is a flippant game, but this is not an accurate description. It is heavily symbolic and covers a journey of self-discovery and overcoming mental illnesses. A wonderful and eye-opening experience with an abundance of content to explore, well worth its full price tag of $AU30.

I already completed the game and all achievement. And all i can say is this game is beautiful. The story, music and art is absolutely amazing. The very strength part of this game is story for me. I really enjoyed the story.

For me, it is already one of my GOTY for 2023.

Is this game a masterpiece? Hm, no, but quite a soulful adventure.

The mechanics are simple - walk left or right (or inside houses) and interact with hotspots using a dial with the available options - examine, talk, interact, use with an object from the inventory. You move rather slow (running is possible) and you can't jump, this is not a platformer. You carry a book with you that contains your current objectives, a map, your inventory and your collectibles.

The story is taking place in Indonesia and shows a little of the life there, which is always interesting for me as a Westener. You play a young boy, still going to high school, who awakes from a dream and is now doing what kids do in this age, like skipping school to meet with his girlfriend Raya. You pet every cat you find (kicking them is not even possible), talk to everyone, collect various items either to use in puzzles later or just as collectibles. Collectibles are often at remote edges, but they flash so they are easier to spot. You flirt with other girls, build a cat shelter, meet a bully... but somehow you sense that it is not all as beautiful and perfect as it looks. When humans turn into cat zombies and you begin to spacedive into other people's mind, the story becomes a bit... darker.

The game works fine with controller, the puzzles are not too difficult (also due to the limited interface - there are not THAT many options to try out).

Conclusion:
Wholesome, slow adventure, that is a BIT more doleful than it looks at first sight. With lots of cats. And you might weep.

A 'point-and-click'-ish adventure. The gameplay is... fine. Does it's job, but nothing revolutionary.

The story though, hoo-boy. There's too much to relate for me, right down to the quirks. Is it a Southeast Asian thing to have the same traumatized childhood or something?
